Ok so right now I'm waiting for a replacement for my HR-34 which started having hard drive errors. We're going to lose the stuff on the DVR. (again)

I'm sure I've read about this before but can't seem to find it now.

If I hook up an external hard drive to an HR-34, is it tied to the receiver? I mean, would getting a replacement receiver still mean losing everything on the DVR if it was on an external drive? Or can you simply plug the EHD into the new receiver and automagically have all of your recorded programming back?

It's tied to the receiver so if you move it you will lose all the recordings.
If you are losing hard drives I suggest you power the HR-34 from a UPS, to avoid power interruptions crashing the disk drive.

Recordings are tied to the receiver ID. If they replace your receiver and you move your external HD from old to new the recordings will say not authorized when trying to playback, and you'll end up formatting it to start fresh.
