How will hopper receive OTA signal?

Dish has been saying that OTA should be available in the future for the hopper. Any idea if it will require a separate OTA module like the 722k does? And if so, what are the chances that it will take the same module? If that's a possibility shouldn't I be allowed to take the module out of the 722k before I send the receiver back to Dish? Especially since I bought the module out right. The only thing I'm worried about is I don't think I kept the blank plate I took out to insert the module. Any idea if Dish would have a problem receiving a 722k back without a module or plate?

USB OTA tuner. Just plugs into the back of the hopper.

There's plenty of manufacturers who already make hardware like that. Dish just has to pick one off the shelf and make it compatible with the proper software or get someone in China to make a custom version. Off the shelf would probably be the cheaper option for customers since you can shop around wherever the tuner is sold.

Dish should have no problem with you returning the 722k without the module. The module should be purchased so it is yours to do what you want with.

That would be a quite ugly accessory. The form factor for the preexisting card does not lend itself to that.

I would imagine the Dish solution will be a low profile solution that sits on top of the Hopper.

True but with the available length of USB cables it could be hidden just about any where.

--- i'm not looking for something "nice", with a usb extension cord we can hide that ugly module away and still use it for the purpose, but we know that this will never happen unless we make the solution ourselves ---

I think the big question will be if the USB Tuner relies on the host operating system for control or if the box with have its own user interface?

Since most users will expect the OTA channels to be in the EPG, then the Hopper OS will need to be the controller for the USB Tuner. That makes the selection process a lot more complicated and not just any off-the-shelf tuner.

very cool idea. so instead of saving to windows media center (or similar program), it would save and view from a hopper box over your network.

Maybe at least some unofficial support to recognize the device and tuners over your network....that would be enough (not sure how feasible that is)

But then you're having to control two devices. I don't see Dish incorporating that command set. Dish no doubt wants a seamless operation, one EPG and one recording device.

He's not talking about a USB tuner being ugly, but the MT2 module being ugly.
