So we built a lake house and wired three rooms with coax. I need to know the different methods of wiring up receivers and which is the best way. For example my house I have two rooms each with their own coax, both going to the slimline. My brother has some sorta splitter looking thing that you plug into 120v then I think he only has one wire going to his slimline. What are the advantages and what is that splitter called?

Your brother has a swm lnb setup. It uses one cable from the dish to a power inserter, then to a swm splitter. You must use the swm splitter and the power inserter. Your setup uses a regular lnb at the dish with up to four tuners driven from it. There are advantages to each depending upon the particular situation.
Swm means using a swm lnb which has one output, or a regular lnb with four outputs and a swm switch, usually in the house. You can use what you have, just run one line to the house and one to the garage. No power inserter is needed. You do need one line for a receiver and two for a dvr if you aren't using a swm setup.
