How to watch PyeongChang 2018 Olympics in 4K HDR

Did not work for me. I moved a 4K HDR recording to my EHD. From both 4K Joeys I can now see the recording file. When I try to play it I get the 1540 popup window and I see the recording in the background. When I click OK in the popup window I see the recording for about a second then it disappears and goes to live TV. This happens on both my 4K Joeys that are linked to this Hopper that has the recording in the EHD. One TV is a HD model and the other TV is 4K but no HDR. Wonder why this work around works for you but not me.

Maybe his TV is HDR capable while yours isn't...

That could be it. My TV is a 4K 50" Samsung (can't recall the model) that claims to have HDR. It's only an 8-bit panel so I always thought if it did have HDR it was not very good. Guess it's good enough in this situation.

Thanks for clearing this up for us. Maybe someday DISH will get the 4K Joeys working for everything.

The 4K HDR has spoiled me to the point that I now consider my local NBC channel (as delivered overcompressed by dish) completely unwatchable. Especially the downhill skiing. Just a big mess of motion blur and artifacts, like a YouTube video from 15 years ago. Looks fine OTA.

I bought my 60" 4k a few months to soon, just missed the addition of HDR. I don't buy TV's every few years. Actually, I have bought four other tv's since then, but they were to replace smaller receivers. There's only one place in my home I'm going to put a 60" receiver, so I'm not going to be replacing it for some time. Buying the latest and greatest doesn't seem to be an issue for some of you, the answer for this problem seems to be "go buy a new TV" according to some. Not going to happen here, but making the feed ONLY usable with HDR seems to exclude a lot of us, when 4k has been hyped, but barely provided.

Those are the pains of being an early adopter. But I'm sure in the future there will be stuff in 4k and stuff in 4k hdr. And maybe dish will get on figuring out a way to pipe down just 4k if the tv set is not hdr compatible, just like Netflix does.

I don't know if anyone has tried this, but it "works"... As previously mentioned, transferring the 4KUHD recordings to an EHD allows them to be seen on the 4K Joey. So I started the Ski Jump presentation from Sunday 2.18 and got the 1540 notice. Instead of saying OK or Cancelling, I pressed Menu twice so I could check the MOCA stats. The program continued on in the background while I was poking around in the Menu system. When I exited the Menu screens, I was watching the Men's Large Hill ski jump with no pop-up box. The colors are washed out, but that's to be expected on my 1080p, non-HDR Sony Bravia.

I can also do this with my 4k non hdr tv. As soon as it starts to record, I can play the recording in the box in the corner, without the error box, and then bring it back full screen. but its a 1080 signal, not 4k, and not a very good 1080. Now, I will add the caveat that I am running the signal through my receiver, then to the tv. I'm not going to disrupt the program while my wife is watching the Ladies' Free Skate. I'll run a cable directly to the TV from the H3 when she's done watching, and see if anything improves.

H3 connected directly to my 4k non hdr TV, 1080i signal. So, I can watch the Olympics a day late, in 1080i, with a picture not as good as what I get on the standard 1080 feed. At least not unless I want to play with the settings, and then change them back when I'm done. What it does show is that yes, the channel is viewable, but has been "blocked." Thanks Dish!

I can confirm, the above trick works. But the colors are all way off. Pretty much unwatchable, as far as I am concerned.

The fact that it looks like crap on non 4KHDR equipment is probably why they hid it behind the error message in the first place.

Well,
I only had to minor tweek tv settings on my 1080tv to get a picture with a lot less video compression and much better that the standard 1080o channel.

Just wish Dish had at least made the 'error' message bypassable for those whose hardware plays nice.

I recorded the opening ceremony even though it wouldn’t let me watch it on my Epson LS10000.

I added a device from HD Fury called the Vertex. Vertex 4K60 4:4:4 600MHz | HDFury.com | Connect and Fix everything in HDMI

Using this I’m now able to watch the opening ceremony on my projector.
