Hello All
I own 4 SD directv receivers I would like to upgrade to have 2 HD recievers.
I called them today and they said one for free and the other for 99 dollars but the catch is it is only a lease and I am committed for 2 yrs.
So my question is How do I own my equipment I see on ebay and craigslist to buy all day long. Do I buy from them.
Also if I go with the 2 commitment after it is up do they make commit again as long as you have the receivers.
I only do this so I enable/disable account.

Thanks to All for you help

Whatever DirecTV HD receivers you see on eBay or Craigslist are there illegally as you can't sell leased receivers. The only DirecTV HD DVR that can be purchased is the HR21 Pro. DirecTV may let you buy a receiver at its retail price, a lot higher than $99.

Why do you want to 'own' the receivers? DirecTV is going to charge you either a $5/month mirroring charge for a owned receiver vs. a $5/month lease charge, monthly charge is the same.

As for the commitment, once the 2 years is up, that's it, you're free to cancel with no charge if you wish. If you add another receiver during your 2 yr commitment the 2 years starts over again, it's not in addition to any prior commitment.

I understand they charge 5 dollars per receiver I would like to own one so I can control my account that is all

Ok found one Direct TV HR21-700 DVR Receiver

How do I no if it is own or leased is there a way to tell
thanks

Get the receiver serial, access card and RID number from the seller and call DirecTV and ask them.

ok will do thanks
is there anything else I should know on how to own my HD receiver

You do understand that your monthly cost per receiver is the same, regardless of whether it is leased or owned?

GL, Eric

I understand that
but when my lease is up I have to give my receiver back or up for 1 more year.

Not really. Once your committment is up you can leave whenever you want or just stay a subscriber and leave whenever you want. You don't automatically get recycled into a new committment unless you change your equipment. It is true that you'd have to return a leased receiver if you decide to leave DirecTV. In the meantime you run a significant risk of buying a leased piece of equipment from an eBay or Craigslist that you couldn't use. By the way, an HR 21-700 is not an HR21-Pro so be very careful as there a very, very few owned HR21-100/700's out there.

Ok I will ask for there info and call directv.

So If I get there lease option and cancel it after 2yrs will I be able to keep there equipment and subscribe any time I want

The key word is "cancel". If you cancel your subscription to DirecTV before the end of the commitment with a leased receiver, you have to return it and pay an early cancellation fee. If you don't cancel, then you can keep it as long as you want by paying the monthly subscription. There is no new commitment involved.

I think the thing is that truly buying a receiver is extremely expensive, much more than what you can get from DirecTV on the up front lease payment. I don't have the exact figures, and I'm sure somebody here does, but it's about twice maybe more for a true purchase. Secondly there's very little secondary market for owned receivers. Typically you keep them long enough that by the time you want to sell them they're obsolete. What you're seeing on eBay are for the most part either "illegal" sales of leased receivers or authorized dealers "selling" receivers though the fine print, at least on the more reputable ads, tell you they are leased receivers.

I think the OP is trying to indicate that he wants to be able to shut off his account for long vacations, or some other reasons, and re-activate again later on. I am not very familiar with DirecTVs vacation policy (I know with Dish, I can keep leased receivers on an inactive account for a small monthly fee IF I'm out of contract) so I can't say what the advantages might or might not be for the OP. OP: If you tell us why you don't want a contract (be specific) we can tell you if you should buy or lease. If you continue to be vague about it, people will just keep trying to convince you to lease as it is the best option 99% of the time.

what he wants to do is activate/deactivate the receiver whenever he wants without having to return it to d*, and if its owned he can do so.... if its leased, it has to be returned when he deactivates it. but after the 2 years is up the receiver will become 'owned' for this purpose.

Whats this about cats fury?

Maybe it's just too early and I haven't had enough coffee but I'm not sure this statement is correct. I could be misreading but if I am others might too. Granted equipment becomes obsolete and reaches a point where DirecTV wouldn't want it back but there's nothing magical about leasing a receiver for two years and having it become "owned".

This is correct If I lease I cannot do this
