How to do the double reset?

When you do the double reset to resolve search and guide issues, how long do you wait between resets? Do you do the second reset after the receiver is all the way back up, or during the blue screen?

I've never had to do the double reset, but I believe that you need to do the second one within 30 minutes of the first.
