I connected my Dish box to wifi some time ago, but I noticed that it is constantly sending and receiving even when the box is supposedly off (seems nothing is really off any more).

I decided to disable wifi but I can’t find a menu option to do that, just ways to change and reset it. Any one know how to do that, or where the setting is?

Change your wi-fi password. But doing so will disable some functions on the Hopper that depend on an ethernet connection.

I know I can change it, but that means I have to update it on every other device and phone in the house. Seems silly that you can’t just turn it off. I know I’ll lose some features and channels but I’m not too bothered by that.

Change the password, log in and enter the new password into the Hopper then change it back so all your other devices will work properly.

This is really an exercise in futility because the Hopper uses very little data day to day and the change is hardly worth the effort.

He means change the password on the receiver to something bogus so it won't connect to your router. You won't have access to any apps, VOD, etc.

That's probably an easier way to do it, but as I said, the Hopper does not really transmit that much data. Do you have data caps and are you exceeding them?

No data caps, I just don’t like it, especially as the box is supposed to be off. I know it’s never really off because I hear it clicking at random times. The bandwidth usage wasn’t insignificant. I just set it to join my neighbors wifi and typed in some rubbish for a password. That didn’t work of course but it dropped the connection to my wifi. Ideally I’d rather just turn the radio off, but whatever.

Edit: forgot to say thank you, so thanks.

A simple inline switch at the outlet will turn the receiver completely off. Of course it would have to go through the whole startup routine when you turn it back on. And you'll miss the nightly updates...

True, but boot up takes forever. I’m happy enough to just cut it off from calling home.

Hit Home 3 times. Drop to #2 Network. Then hit #7 Network Settings Then hit Info - Recall on the remote, it'll ask if you want to clear Network Settings, click OK
