Start off with the linear LNBF in the centre position, with no switches or motor as mentioned. This will get you famililar with aligning the dish and peaking for maximum Quality. Do not be fooled into looking at the signal strength meter, ignore it and only be concerned with the quality meter. Only after you have become famililar with adjusting the dish for different satellites and peaking it for maximum quality, then venture into adding the motor. Just remember, little steps as it will be extremely frustrating if you try to set it up with a motor and switches the first time.
Once you venture to adding the circular LNBF, add it to one side of the linear one. The circular signals are so strong, that being off of the sweat spot will make little diffference. With the linear signals, you need as much gain as possible, so make sure you keep the linear lnbf in the centre.
Remember when searching for the satellite the first time:
- Make sure the LO value is correct for the LNBF used
- Use no switches or motors
- Make sure to have the receiver set to an active, strong transponder
- Calculate the Azumith and elevation settings from one of the online calculators. Be sue to use the magnetic values or to add the proper magnetic deviation to the true (map) values as your compass points to the magnet and not true (map) north.
- Use a compass to find the direction you need to point your dish at. Pick out something on the horizon to line your dish up with.
- Remember, with offset dish's, the dish will appear to point lower than where it is actually pointing (think of it as a pool table with the signal coming in from the sky, bouncing off the dish and into the lnbf)
- When searching for the signal, make very small movements to the dish, and wait a few seconds for the receiver to respond.
Be sure to read over the different guides such as on Sadoun's web site on how to setup your dish. Don't forget to also look over Iceberg's tips for more pointers.
Succecding one step at a time can make it very enjoyable, but trying to do it all in one step will just get you very frustrated.
Here is a good web site on how to use your compass
