How long old receivers supported.

My Vip211 recently died and Dish sent me a refurb 211k replacement and the told me to just throw the old receiver away because it was antiquated hardware. I really don't want to move to the hopper. Although the hopper's user interface is pretty. It's also painfully slow to use and I already paid the $40 to do the external Hard drive DVR upgrade on my 211. At just $7 a month for DVR service with my current receiver, I'm in no hurry to ever move to the hopper. Has Dish made any statement about forced upgrades to Hoppers in the future? I wonder how big a supply of replacements they have for the old hardware as they break down. Has anyone seen any info on Dish's plans?

You are saving money with $7 deal but are dead wrong about hopper being painfully slow. The Model 3 is blinding fast and yes , the older models are painfully slower but Dish has a new "free" USB stick hitting the market that will provide the Model 3 guide speeds performance for the older models.

So one can expect to see a bunch of Model 1 Hoppers (presently turtle like guide performance) cycle back into service.

The likely upgrade from the 211 series to a like receiver would be a Wally. It has a Hopper like user interface and will accept your existing EHD.

Unless something changed, I was told you have to purchase Wally's. Yes, a Wally would be the logical update to the 211 but I can't understand them wanted to charge for it.

I think we're still a few years away from being forced off ViP receivers. My guess is when the time comes, they'll swap single 211 accounts with a Wally at no charge.

Wally's can be leased but I'm not sure if there's an inexpensive upgrade path for existing customers.

If it's fast enough to support the guide, it could be around forever since it uses their latest encoding technology.

I am looking at buying a Wally, but so far there is no problem with my vip211k.

With Wallys selling for ~$65, I wouldn't think buying one was too big of a problem.

I wouldn’t worry about it. There is always going to be some version of an HD receiver equivalent to a 211 or Wally.

Worse case scenario they will force a hopper on everyone and allow you to disable the DVR

No issue with the guide for the vip211k. It works fine. My old 2700/2800 got to the point where the guide would take time to load, so I knew that was being phased out.
