I just did exact same thing

since you are in canada, where it freezes.

4 feet is what you want to aim for. +/- 3 inches

4 feet is the minimum to be below the frost line in Canada. Make sure you also flare the bottom of the hole out a bit and add some packed gravel to ensure you have a good base.

The concrete should be slightly higher at the pole than the edges of the hole to allow the rain and water to run away from the pole. You don't want the water to pool at the pole base and rust out the pole. Even if the concrete base is below the ground level, you still want the concrete higher at the pole.

Put plenty of concrete!!! You might decide to put a 10' up later, and it would need more
strength to hold up-no fun having to do them twice. I am speaking from experience here lol.

Also be sure and drill or blow holes to put re-bar in a crisscross pattern in the hole to prevent the pole from turning...
I couldn't agree more then what dfergie said! Remember to put some re-bar through the pole to keep it from turning in the cement. 4 feet sounds about right for you up there. Send us some photo's of it when you are done or even while you are puting it up!
