Hi,

For those of you out there with Evu a question. I heard that for Evu, when a US show in being transmitted via the regular US network, if one of the canadian stations also purchased the right to show it, that they will do the "simultaneous substituion" of that show, so that it shows the log of the canadian station. Is that correct? if so, do you see a lost of quality in the HD picture? Thinking about getting Evu cause they have both East/West feed of US networks, but not sure if with the simsub, pic quality will be bad.

Thanks!

Francisco

Right now CTV/Bell has stopped simsubs due to the technical problems that CTV is having with their HD feeds. CTV's picture quality is oftern "washed out". I've heard that Global offers a much better HD picture. Both networks seem to have problems with sound. The always seem to transmit a DD5.1 signal even if the program is only 2.0, this results in sound being out of phase if you have a home theater setup.

CTV hopes to have their problems rectified by the spring when they start over-the-air transmition in Toronto and Vancouver. At that time simsubs will resume.

The area of HD simsubs of OTA programming has not been settled yet. If it ends up being the same as NTSC broadcasts, then for Expressvu subs it will "Any Canadian station anywhere asks for simsub, all Expressvu will see"

For SC/cable companies; it would be subs in Grade B contour of ATSC signal.

At the present time, there is a CRTC hearing about Cancom/StarChoice omnibus HD channels. On the 1 side is StarChoice/Cancom + cable companies - on the other side is Bell and their produce no HD buddies in the Canadian broadcast industry - Global. The outcome of these hearings will have a profound effect of the amount of future HD that Canadian distributors will have.

The CRTC commissioners will have to judge what is more important to them - their patronage appointments (courtesy of Bell et al) or the future competitiveness of the Canadian broadcast industry in a HD world.

Any news on Evu or SC HD PVR??
