.....
I discovered this nest on my property a couple of weeks ago. It has grown quite a bit since I found it. I would like to take it down this winter & preserve it somehow, it would make a nice conversation piece. The problem is I don't have a clue how to preserve something like this. Any ideas? By the way this is an active nest.

Well a few good coatings of aquanet would do the job of holding the paper together but you also have to worry about any hornets that might be over wintering in the nest. Most that I have seen preserved where taken with a 2 - 3 foot section of branch and put inside of a glass display case. You should be able to google glass / plexi glass display cases to find something that will work for you.

Kind of what I was thinking. It definitely needs to be in some type of an enclosure for a good while before even thinking of preserving.

You should be able to get the hornets out by putting the nest into the garage and enclosing the nest in a large container such as a clean trash can and warming up the inside of the can with a 40wt bulb. This will warm the air and they should come out after an hour or two at which point you can either get the bug spray out or move the can outside and remove the lid letting them get cold and drop to the bottom at which point you can pour them into a can and cover with shredded newspaper and shelter in a covered outdoor spot till spring letting them go. You might have to do this three times to insure all are out.

You're too kind. Kill 'em. My wife is highly allergic to them, life threatening.

Not everyone is blood thirsty and karma can be a bitch. We have about a dozen writing spiders plus another dozen orb spiders around our house that we leave alone though our daughter is another story and while we have no problem killing off pests like flea's or roaches and fire ants we leave the spiders alone because they serve a purpose.

Spiders are our friends, they eat pesky little bugs that make our lives miserable. Hornets and yellow jackets, on the other hand, deserve any bomb we can hit them with.

Hey guys I agree with you 100%. This nest however is not near the house and not any danger to others, except maybe my horses. I have seen them within just a few feet of it rolling in the dirt and shaking it off & not attract any attention from the hornets. I have also seen them rip off and eat wild rose branches with thorns and munch away like nothing out of the ordinary. I know my horses well, they are like big watch dogs, not too much slips by them. I am certain they are aware of it. Trust me I would have destroyed this nest when I first found it if I thought it would be a danger to people.

Oh dear lord! Bees! - The Something Awful Forums

I come across hornet's nests on my property from time to time. Any ones near the house or pool, I will nuke. The ones on the outskirts, away from where the kids will likely go, I tend to leave alone.

After watching the latest documentary on CCD and bee's last night I'm reconsidering my use of pesticides around the house come next year when we will be doing more planting. This situation with honey bee's is not looking good at all.

Yep. We're heading for a fall. I'm hoping genetic engineering may come up with something to save them.
