We recently moved and was able to get Dish again after not having it for almost 2 years. My husband got the Hopper 2 with 3 joeys. Every night at 1am my tv hooked up thru a joey to the hopper shuts down for updates no matter what I do. This is annoying to the point I am about to cancel the Dish account and pay the fee just to get rid of it.

The second problem is there is no way to make the fontsize bigger, which is a huge problem for me as I have cataracts and have to get within a foot or so to see the guide and stuff. I also have mobility issues which sometimes makes it hard to get that close to see the print. I was so happy to get Dish again so I could see the tv after not being able to watch much tv for the last 2 years. Now all I do is cry because with this Hopper and Joeys Dish has regressed not progressed.

Almost $500 ($480 minus $20 a month for the time you've had the new system) is a lot to cancel, especially when the Hopper 2 is getting a new User Interface which will address those problems Or maybe you could get Dish to let you exchange your H2 for the new 16-Tuner Hopper 3, which already has that new interface. I'd hold on a bit if I were you.

The Hooper 3, which was released at the end of January, addresses both of these problems.
The Carbon UI doesn't really address the font size issue.

Only the guide has the larger font option, even then it is not much of an improvement over the H2 font.

There is still al lot of gray on gray, low contrast, small fonts throughout the UI.

that's kind of a preference thing as I think they are much too big. And I think the icons are HUGE.....But it's true that maybe there should be more options to satisfy everyone :)

The "large" guide is still only appropriate for close to normal vision - more a tweak for those with smaller sets, or further away.

To address vision issues, they need (at least) large and bold options for ALL type, a higher contrast theme option for the entire UI. A higher contrast "light" theme for the guide would be good as well.

The Hopper 2 will be getting the new UI as well.
Do you mean that the new UI (Carbon?) will address the shutdown at around 1am issue? It isn't really a flaw since it seems to be intentional, but it is annoying. Before the HWS I had a 622 that allowed me to adjust the nightly shutdown time which was very convenient, so being able once again to set the shutdown time will be welcomed.

You haven't begun to explore the options. If you are intent on cancelling you can do that, pay the cost and move on. Or, you can get VIP equipment that allows you to pick when to have them reboot for updates. They may charge to change the wiring but likely they will change receivers for you. Too bad you did not come here first and read all about the Hopper, both those complaints you have are discussed.
When was this installed?

From the start you are incorrect. A screen will come on alerting you a shutdown is about to occur. You get the option to continue watching or not, comes on about every 20 minutes or so.

Maybe you need a larger TV.
I'm fine with it, but a couple of extended family members have vision issues. I don't think simply the addition of the "large" guide does much to impact usability of the Hopper UI for those circumstances.

I don't want someone thinking Carbon will be a fix - it isn't.

The one or two suggestions that I have, because I have experienced the same problems. If you have another electronic device, such as a DVD or Blu Ray DVD player or VCR, stacked on top of the Hopper/Joeys, then take it off of the Hopper/Joeys. I have been told from DIRT on Facebook PM in the past, that I should plug the DVRs directly into the wall outlet instead of plugging them into surge protectors. You might try that if you have not already done this. Good Luck, and hopefully, this will help both of us and our frustrations.

I fail to see how plugging into a wall outlet will change the set update time or the font size?

It is a common suggestion. I doubt it does much of anything other than to eliminate problems associated with a surge suppressor that does not supply clean power but it tends to be suggested for everything.

Don't need to set a time, H3 & Joey will not update till turned off - haven't seen that message since I upgraded 2 weeks ago & I'm up late every night. Very welcome addition to the new UI.

It's because they do want you to be in bed when the hopper is asking for you to select the yes option and asking you to do the nightly update i too have addressed this to a ton of people and have suggested it to be added to so many people when the hopper and hopper with sling both came out.

Read my post - in the Carbon UI which is now on the H3 - there is NO nightly update interruption. Don't understand what you are saying - Dish has listened to all that complained & finally fixed it.

Hopper 1 and 2 comparison info?

Best place to get real cost of going with Dish.
