Hopper Install Issues - Advice??

We've had DISH for the past 13 years and have had the same receiver the entire time. For my Christmas present, we were finally going to upgrade to a Hopper with Sling + 2 Joeys and the installation was supposed to happen yesterday. When the tech arrived, he said that we had line of site issues with 129, but 110 and 119 are okay. The only places it WOULD work is if we put a hole through the roof (which we really don't want to do) or cut down one of the trees from our backyard (also not really a great option). We rewired the entire house in prep for this install and were very disappointed with the results. Has anyone had similar issues to this and found a workaround? I'd really like to stick with the Hopper system if possible since I've heard such great things about it, but we really need a DVR and so any advice would be appreciated. I also hate to even think about switching as DISH has never given us a problem before, but if we considered DirecTV would we have the same problems?

Looking at the sat maps, it appears St. Louis has the locals on the EA as well. That's eastern arc, which looks a bit south east compared to the 129/110/119. If that is true, maybe you could call and find out why they didn't try to point that direction instead.

I'm not sure what the disappointment is. Is the installer pressing for an EA install where WA is currently installed?

Assuming that trees will never become a problem is not sound thinking.

And you could always put up an additional dish, say a 500. Might have more location options that way. But a shift to EA might be best, looking at 61.5 & 72.

The disappointment that I was referring to was just from the expectation that we were going to be able to get the system and putting in lots of work around the house to get it & then having the tech basically tell us it wasn't a possibility and not giving us a ton of options. The installer didn't mention anything about the EA, so I'm not sure if he didn't realize it was a possibility or if that satellite is off the table for us.

As an installer - you need either 129 or 72 to download to the hopper, PERIOD. If the locals are only on WA or the 129 then sure you can go EA but you would lose locals. My question is do you have HD right now with what you have and what do you have?? You didn't say you had just a regular 500 system with 119 and 110 to start with which is what I'm assuming you have. So now assuming again you didn't have HD and HD locals are only on 129 then yep that is a problem. You just can't make tree's move by a flip of a finger and you can't put up a new 1000.2 sat to hit 129 with tree's in the way cause it won't download and that is not allowed - we have strict LOS to stay with a clearance of 5 degrees around each sat or we won't put it in.

Most people at this point won't cut trees either cause they can't do it themselves or can't pay someone else to do it so not the techs fault. If you are insisting on getting the hopper and going Eastern Arc and HD locals are on 129 then don't be pissed when you can't get them after all the work is done and you were told that up front cause a EA setup is much more difficult to wire and involves a wing dish for 110 or 119 to get regular locals to go along with it just not HD's.

I almost need more information, pictures and so on to really diagnose the issue without standing there.

If he is actually in the St Louis DMA as his location lists, then either Eastern Arc (EA) or Western Arc (WA) will work, as St Louis HD locals are on both arcs. He just needs to find out if he has LOS to EA if the WA LOS is unavailable.

For the OP Eastern Arc is 61.5, 72.7 and 77 whereas Western Arc is 110,119, and 129.

EHD????
