Love this site for so much information.. Just came back to Dish from Comcast and got the Hopper 3. Not experiencing the problems yet that have been posted.

I am very interested in the Hopper Go. Does anyone have any information about a release date?

Thank you for your time

I'm wondering if the programs are COPIED or TRANSFERRED to the HopperGo. When I use the "prepare for mobile" feature of the Hopper and transfer programming to my cell phone sometimes it's a TRANSFER (with no way to transfer it back to Hopper as far as I can see) and sometimes it's a COPY. Them being transferred is certainly less convenient than them being copied because I may or may not end up watching them on my phone and in that case want to be able to watch them on the Hopper.

Just tried on H3 and it says it will be removed from hopper, assuming go will work the same.

As I stated DishAnywhere (I called it "prepare for mobile") SOMETIMES does a transfer of the program, sometimes does a copy depending on the specific program. As long as it is easy to transfer back from the HopperGo to the Hopper that would be fine but I don't see a way to do that when I end up TRANSFERRING something to my cell phone, once it is there no way to get it back on the Hopper as far as I can tell.

I'm fairly certain that I read somewhere mobile transfers are a "one-way journey" and that they cannot be moved back to the Hopper. I've never investigated it though so I can't say for sure.
(Found this in an article on the 'Net): "Transferring video has a few caveats.... If you transfer a show from a premium network such as HBO, no one can view that show any more on the Hopper. And, while you can have multiple iPads paired with the Hopper, recordings can only be transferred once, according to Dish."

I've done transfers to my cell phone and sometimes they are TRANSFERs and sometimes COPYs, I've never understood exactly which channels are transfers and which copies. I don't subscribe to any premium movie channels so things like HBO aren't involved.

So prior to purchasing a HopperGo I'd like clarification of rules for how it is determines which programming is a TRANSFER and which are a COPY. I'd also like to know if the HopperGo can be used like an external hard drive with the Hopper to playback programming from it in case I transfer something to HopperGo let's say for a trip to watch on my tablet/phone and don't end up doing so but then later want to watch it on my home TV via Hopper (with HopperGo acting like an external hard drive).

From what you are describing, it almost sounds like transfers vs. copies are random - like no set rules - either that or it's based on something that we are unaware of. I too am very interested in the HopperGo, but also like you, I would really like to know if I'm "burning my bridges" when I send a recording over to it from my Hopper. Hopefully as this device nears release we'll know more specific details - hopefully.

Please excuse my ignorance, as I just had Dish installed yesterday. Last night I was able to take a recording off my Hopper 3, copy to my iPad and watch it, not connected to my network. Is this the same as what the Hopper Go does, or is there more to it then that?

Its similar, the Hopper Go can store more hours of shows than you iPad, iPhone or android device.
When you want to watch your shows you connect to the Hopper Go by WiFi (up to I believe 5 users) and then watch the shows.

I'm not saying it's random but it's unknown which programming is a COPY and which is a TRANSFER, I haven't been able to figure out a pattern, I only find out once I initiate it and if it's a TRANSFER it warns me before doing it. Many references being made here to HBO which I don't subscribe to (I don't subscribe to any movie channels at all).

But if the HopperGo can be used like an external hard drive with the Hopper to play back programming and/or provides a way to transfer a program back from the HopperGo to the Hopper that's the info I'm definitely interested in knowing.

It is not expected to act as an EHD. Different animal.
Then if it doesn't provide a way to transfer back programming to the Hopper that was TRANSFERRED to the HopperGo (nor play back that programming via the Hopper) then that's a serious limitation. And if the limitation does exist I wonder how many people will buy it without understanding that limitation.

Except you really would not want to transfer a "prepared for mobile" copy back to the Hopper.
1. It probably would be hidden like they are before they are transferred to the mobile device.
2. I believe they are much more compressed and maybe even reduced resolution.

If you have a show that you really want in both places just record a second copy

Seriously re: know in advance to record a second copy??????????? Perhaps I'm the only one but the way I've used Dish Anywhere with my cell phone is I'm about to go on a trip and look what's on my DVR then transfer things to watch with the hope they're a COPY vs TRANSFER and often when it says it's a TRANSFER I don't do it.

I'd just like clarification to know what channels/programming are TRANSFERs and which are COPYs -- that deems how useful this device would be to me because typically I would NOT want to TRANSFER something to the HopperGo because there's a chance I never get around to watching it on my trip and then have no way to watch it via my Hopper/home TV.

I wonder what "prepare for mobile" exactly is doing re: compression and/or loss of resolution.
