Hopper/External HD issues

Thanks, ones from a 612k which the hopper reads, the other is from a 722k/722 that it says needs reformatting. i had them send multiple hits to my receivers, looks like the wife is going to be pissed.

I would wait before doing anything drastic with the hard drive. It's not impossible a software update might make it work. Is it one that you know worked right up to your upgrade?

I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not but go to the Dish Site and to 'My Equipment'. See if it shows 'External Drive Enabled' set to NO. On mine they both say no even though I do have an Ext HD on the Hopper that was from my 722k which does work, although the Artwork on the icons do not show. I'll give dish a call and see if they can maybe set that to enable with the hopes that it will fix the artwork issue. Maybe that would fix your issue with the one HD not working?

I have the same issue regarding artwork, however if I go to the "Transfer Recordings" menu, a lot of the artwork does show up there.

I have a lot of programming from my 722 on an EHD, which works fine on the Hopper, but as jayiw pointed out, no thumbnails. I initially tried to get the artwork by copying Game of Thrones from the EHD to the Hopper. Didn't work, so I copied them back to the EHD. Then they wouldn't play. Luckily, GoT is playing this week and weekend so I can re-record.

As far as actually getting artwork on the older EHD recordings, just record a new episode of the same program on the hopper. Unfortunately, if you delete that episode, the thumbnail is deleted with it. Not an elegant solution.

Do you have any neighbors or friends with a 612/722 that can move your data to the other HD through their receiver for you?

That won't work...can not share outside one's own receiver(s)/account.

Backed up shows to 2 external hard drives, when hooked up to my hoppper it states the HD needs to be reformatted... Anyway around this as I already lost shows due to a dead 722k hard drive.

How big are your drives? I have two 1.5TB disks, which our Dish receivers partitioned into 3 approx 500GB ext3 (Linux) partitions (plus another smaller ext3 partition up front). I had one of these disks fail, but only on the 2nd 500GB partition; the remaining partitions were fine. Connecting up this bad drive to a Dish receiver resulted in very sluggish response, spontaneous reboots, etc. But I did not actually lose any programs, because I had not at that time exceeded the capacity of the 1st 500GB partition.

Anyhow, what I did to solve this problem was I booted up a Scientific Linux 5.4 liveCD, attached my Dish-formatted semi-deceased drive, and voila. Up popped 3 partitions plus an unreadable partition. I copied off the DishArc folder from the 1st 500GB partition to another disk, had the disk replaced by Western Digital, and then copied the DishArc folder back after letting my Dish receiver format the replacement.

Worked like a charm. You could get lucky as I did and lose a partition that doesn't hold any programs on it.

Its a WD my book 500g. Not sure if your suggestion would work for it or not but I am interested.

Hi there, Im installing the Hopper on 3/31 and I have a 722 with movies/shows I'll like to transfer to new Hopper.
I'm planning to buy a EHD but dont know about spec or limitation of Ext HD from Dish?
Can anyone recommend some spec for an Ext HD so I can buy something that will work? (From a 722 to a Hopper) Thanks!

I bought this at newegg.com, somone on this site reccomened this setup: Thermaltake BlacX ST0005U External Hard Drive SATA Enclosure Docking station (nice thing is that it has both a USB and Esata) and is hot swappable with your drives.I also bought this 2tb WD hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive From what I understand the Hoppers support up to 2TB on the ehd.I haven’t had any issues with these products.

Here are the basics. WD is the most preferred around here.

So if I buy a 2 TB hard drive I will have that amount of new space available or Dish have some limits of how much more you can use from that Ext HD? (500GB, 1TB)

Dish will have you reformat your drive to work with their system. They will let you use all of your ehd for yourself. I had about 1.9 TB free out of my 2TB drive after it was formatted. The format process is easy, plug it in to your DVR and follow the onscreen promts. Took about 20 minutes or so for everything.

Dish only partitions/governs the receiver's internal drive, not EHD.
