Hopper 3 keeps starting up with black screen/no sound.

I'm having this too, on a Hopper that was recently replaced. Where do you set it to turn off the Hopper along with the TV?
I've never noticed that setting anyplace?

I'll try that if I can find it, my hopper also shuts down and updated in the middle of watching something even though I know the time to update is in the middle of the night.
Which is really annoying if I'm watching something.

Everything that is recorded from a DISH receiver is, first, encrypted, and second, is account driven. So, there is no way for you to play those recordings on anything that is not a DISH receiver that is attached to your account. You could leave DISH and return and if you don't get lucky enough to get the original account number you lose everything on that EHD. I know that isn't what you want to hear but it is the reality of the situation.

If you have a 54 remote along with your Hopper to change channels and such it is fairly simple. If you are turning your TV off and on with your TV remote and channel changing with your 54 remote all you have to do is set up your 54 remote to control your TV as well as your Hopper. You do this this way: With the TV on On the 54 remote press the Home button twice. Next, go to Settings, Remote Control. Under Devices go to TV and click it. Now go to TV Pairing Wizard and then find the Brand of TV and then press Next. Now press Search For Model and enter your TV Model Number and then press Save. Now you will see your Model Number at the top of the list, click on it and press Next. On your 54 remote press Volume Up and Down and Mute and your TV volume should go up and down and mute. If that woks properly you then press Finished. From this point on when you press the power button on your 54 remote it should should turn both the TV and Hopper on and off with that button. Keep in mind that initially it will look like the Hopper is not turning off, the green power light stays lit, but that will turn itself off in a minute or two all by itself.

What I did notice is that my software version is H215, not H315. So is that correct do the numbers go up in jumps like 215, 216, etc.

What about the HDMI-CEC setting in the 54 remote & the TV CEC setting?

I just checked my software version number and it's H215.
I see that the posts here say the latest is H315 but when I went to upgrade the software is says that it's going to update to H215 which is what it's at already.

How do I get it to get the latest version?

I'm confused. In your initial post you asked how to turn off the Hopper along with the TV. Then you said you are using your Dish remote to turn off the TV and the Hopper. Which is it?

Different Hopper models, Hopper 3, Hopper w/Sling (2), Hopper 2000, and Hopper Duo have different software numbers. That could be your difference. Which Hopper are you using?

IIRC H215 is the latest for the HwS.
I see that the posts here say the latest is H315 but when I went to upgrade the software is says that it's going to update to H215 which is what it's at already.
H316 is the latest for the Hopper 3.
 
The start up black screen no sound with H3 (and sometimes at a Joey) has been happening to me at least a few times a week since LAST YEAR. Here are my solutions:

1. WAIT a little bit and it may start up after SEVERAL seconds, but if the does not work, try #2 below.

2. After you have waited long enough, at the black screen, just press your Channel UP or Channel Down button and that ALWAYS brings up the HOME Screen (I have my H3 and Joeys set for HOME Screen and video and sound; for your settings, it may just show the video and play sound of the channel) and brings the H3 ALIVE and showing video and audio. This solution never fails, but I always wait to give it a chance to fix itself before invoking the sure think of this step.

I hope I have understood your problem and that this suggestion works for you. I will always avoid having to RMA my H3's if I can find a solution. It is really a stupid situation that sometimes the H3 just won't go through the get out of Standby routine when it should, but I should not have to even bother with a Channel Up or Channel Down fix. The H3 should work as it should.

It’s like it has a mind of its own! Last two mornings it stayed black with sound. Waited awhile and using my Harmony turned it all off and back on. Pic then came back no problem. This morning turned it on and had to wait maybe 30 secs but everything eventually came on.

I never use the remote that came with the TV for anything that has to do with Dish, but It seems to me that often the Dish box stays on when I turn off the TV using the Dish remote, I saw the post that says it should be set to turn off both but didn't find that setting anywhere.

If you are using a DISH 54 remote it will appear to not turn off the Hopper when you press the power button and it turns off the TV. But, if you look at the green power LED on the face of the Hopper it should stay lit for a minute to 5 minutes and then should go out. It will turn off the Hopper and TV automatically if your TV is entered correctly in the instructions I left above. This assumes that you are not pressing the TV button on the left side of the remote and then pressing power to turn off the TV. You should always be in the Sat mode. If the Hopper power LED stays lit beyond that time then something else is wrong. Before I go further let us know if the green LED goes out.
 
I personally think this may be a different problem. I have seen this several times where the issue was caused by faulty cabling, even though the Joeys worked with some success. Any chance you can post the results of a signal test here?

To perform this test, Press Home three times, down arrow to "Status". Hit 5, let it run through that process. Take a picture of this. Hit 6, take a picture of this. Hit Back, then 7. Run the connection test, and then the satellite signal test. Take pictures of the results for each satellite. Upload the pictures here when done, please. Doing this will allow me to rule out the possibility of it being a signal issue.

Usually when I see this issue and it isn't a bad receiver, it is a bad LNB, not picking up certain transponders (often due to condensation). If possible, also take a picture of the "eyes" on the LNB of your Dish.

So, as the title says, the past 3 days, when I turn my TV on (LG), the screen goes black, I have no sound. I can get into the TV interface, so I know it's not the TV. I can bring the dish guide up and see it, but no channel will come in until I reboot the my Hopper 3. Once I reboot (push red button in for 10 seconds) it will then go through the whole acquiring signal thing and will run a systems check.

After that, it works fine. I left it on last night because I've been sick and just do not want to call dish at all. I did start moving the most important things to my external drive because I'm pretty sure when I do call dish, they're going to say "your receiver is bad". This is the 4th hopper I've had in the past 3 years (at 2 different houses).

Anyway, wondering if anyone know of a fix for this problem or is my hopper indeed toast?

Also, I still have the entire series of "Dexter" in the hopper, but not sure how much space that would use if I start moving to the external drive. Anyone know? I would hate to lose the whole series.
I have a one gigabyte external hard drive, and it will hold more than my hopper, I have hundreds of movies on it.
