High-pitched whine from DTV HD receiver

We got a new (actually refurbished) DirecTV HD (non-DVR) receiver a couple months back, and today out of nowhere we noticed a high-pitched whine coming from the area of the receiver.

We turned it on and off, reset it, unplugged it and plugged it back in, and the whine is still there. It's even there when the receiver was off and unplugged.

Anyone experienced this or heard of this? I suppose it could be coming from some other source, but it seems to be coming straight from the receiver.

Possibly the hard drive.

Give D* a call and see if they will send out a new one.

If it does, then it's probably not the receiver but something else close by. Transformers, cooling fans, and surge protectors are good places to start.

Yeah i agree , if it's unplugged and u still hear the sound then it's not the reciever but if u have the protection plan by all means use it and won't cost u. good luck.

Good catch, I didn't notice that ....
Definatly not the unit if you still hear it when the unit is unplugged, I'm betting he mis - typed it .
