I bought a VIP222k from a guy off Ebay and I tried to activate it today. It does not have a smart card in it. They told me that I needed a smart card and that it would be $50. I contacted the seller and he said he never had a smart card. HELP! I bought this to help my father-in-law and he does not have a extra $50 to spend. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

You would need to purchase the SC, but you're better off PMing one and waiting for the response tomorrow. You can call for immediate asst, but I believe they are all off.

Some units require a Smartcard, and others have it built in. Definitely send me a PM and I can check that out to see what is going on.

It has been posted many many times contact DISH before purchasing a privately owned receiver give them the R00# and they can tell you if the receiver can be activated.

If your father-in-law is a new customer, why not just let DISH furnish his equipment. If you're trying to add the receiver to your account, well, good luck with that.

Go to the system info screen and use the smart card listed there to activate it.

If it needs to be updated generally dish will send out an updated card for free.

Play dumb when calling, don't say the card is not in the receiver because sometimes the csr's at dish are idiots and will give you a hassle.
