HELP-->Switching To Dish! Prefered Equipment/Programming When Ordering For 3 Rooms?

OK, check this, because a lot of techs miss it, and by a lot, I mean most techs.

Hit the Home button twice and go to settings

Scroll over to TV and select, make sure it's set for 1080/4K and 16:9 and then drop down and make sure the screen is sized correctly.
Also, I use ch 95, go to any SD Channel, hit options, then number 6 and set the size to which ever size fills your screen. This should set all your SD Channels to "full screen"
I also go to Power and set it to View Last Channel. I hate the Home Screen and the Smart Channel never really worked right, imo.

While you're in there, you may wanna go to Remote Control and make sure the room name is set - helps when you're using Whole Home and TV Activity functions.
On your Joeys, go to Settings/Guide and make sure Hide SD Duplicates is turned on

There's no way a Hopper 3 should have such a distinctively worse picture than a DTV receiver

Oh, and those remote skins are really nice! The yellow (and green too I think) glow in the dark

The image on all three of my TVs for lack of a better word are soft.

HDMI all three.

On two of the TVs HDMI is being fed directly, the other TV HDMI being fed through a Denon receiver and then HDMI from receiver to TV.
1081i all three.

Obviously standard DEF channels suck. I try to avoid them at all cost only one I currently will watch, TV land.

I may have exaggerated way better but the image definitely is not up to par with DirecTV!

With regard to picture quality, I have found a few channels where I notice a difference on my 70" Sony XBR850B compared to the HR54 and C61k I used to have, but not many. Generally, they are the things like TLC or Velocity, and not things like locals or bigger cable channels. Also, things have been getting better recently as Dish upgrades their encoders. Do you know if you are on Eastern or Western Arc? I am on EA, and I was really impressed with the general lack of difference in PQ between DirecTV and Dish when I switched in September.

Not to turn this into a HD request thread that’ll never get fulfilled, but +1 for TV Land in HD!

Sorry to hear about picture quality.. I didn’t notice too much of a difference when I switched from Directv but I’m not much of an videophile.

Yeah, I'm a Borderline Videophile...Seems odd they don't offer TVL-HD!

I hope you're not saying what I think you're saying. You like watching old 4x3 shows stretched and fattened???

Also, there is not a one-size-fits-all setting with regard to SD channels, as some 16x9 content is postage-stamped letterbox and 4x3 content is normal or even a smaller postage-stamp.

Which specific functions are you missing from the 40's? The functions of the Diamond Buttons on the 54's can be customized to replace some of the missing functionality that the 40's have buttons for.

I should have said Dedicated (Clearly Labeled) Buttons...I like the fact the Wife doesn't have to ask how to do this or that because the 54 remote has features buried within a button like FWD, BACK or PIP & SWAP for instance...As time goes by while learning how to navigate the 54s more comfortably I'm sure it will become satisfying. I like having the DVD function on the 40.

I admit, I hate 4x3, but really, I almost never watch anything in SD

I'm the type of person who jumps right in (IRTFM) and digs deep into settings, menus, and TV Service Menus for calibrations, not just the user menus. I understand enough to get myself in trouble!!

I had already done most of the settings you are suggesting, If ya have more lay em on me in case I miss a few.

The Signal being fed to my equipment, via Dish, is NOT as good as DTV's was, AKA, Garbage In-Garbage Out.

SD, I always leave NORMAL. SD already sucks and to stretch or whatever is not my cup of choice.

I ordered 5 skins last night from eBay.

I'm on Western Arc. I immediately noticed the signal/image being displayed on my sets as being a downgrade from DTV. It's OK just not the WOW factor category.

Well, hopefully things will get better when Dish gives the WA some attention.

Is it a known fact that the Eastern Bird is Better?
It all depends on what you mean by "Better." For picture quality, some people say EA is better. EA is all MPEG-4, which may help with SD channels, which are still MPEG-2 on WA. MPEG-4 certainly helps SD recordings take up less space on the hard drive. On the other hand, some people report that there is less rain fade on WA. There is also a slightly larger dish size available for WA, the 1000+ (for international channels) which might also help with reducing rain fade.
