northern iraq
Hello all,
I'm new to the whole satellite thing and need some help with service(channels that carry programs in english). I've got hotbird FTA channels right now, but there aren't very many programs in english. Is there a service like dish network that I can subscribe to out here(Northern Iraq)? I currently have two receivers that I have acquired, 1 apparently is strictly FTA(no slots for any cards), the other is a Super MA:mad:6000 I think), it has two empty slots(no cards came with it). Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated....

welcome to satelliteguys and if you are in the military, thanks for your hard work over there.

i am going to move this to the fta forum. we have the best fta people on the web here at satelliteguys. they will be able to help you out.

again, thanks for your service.

You might go to www.lyngsat.com and check their listings for programming that is in the clear (not pay-tv) on the satellites that can be seen frm your coordinates....that site has most everything listed by region and satellite by satellite. Good luck!!

what's "over there"

Well, first let's figure out where you are.
I looked up maps of Iraq on Google.
Major city in northern Iraq is: Mosul
You may not be able to say location, so we'll use this to figure out what you can see.

I used Google to then search for: latitude mosul iraq
Picked the first link, which was from TimeAndDate.com with this info:
Latitude: 36° 20'North
Longitude: 43° 08'East

San Francisco is 37 + degrees north , so that means the standard FTA dishes will aim fine.

Now, considering you are 43º EAST, you might take a look on Lyngsat web site for a list of birds over there.
Since you have FTA receivers, the first thing to look for will be unscrambled broadcasts.
Pick satellites plus or minus 30 degrees from your 43ºE location to consider. (13ºE to 73ºE)
Then, when you pick one, click on the link in the "beam" column to make sure the satellite covers your area.

If you find interesting FTA programming on a number of birds, you might want to consider getting a motor to re-aim to each of the satellites.
The alternative would be to put up multiple dishes, or at least several LNBs on one dish.

For more info on subscription services, you may have to look to European forums...
.... or, if you can see which services are on viewable satellites, the possibly you could look up the satellite companies on the internet.

You might want to PM goaliebob99

He's in Iraq too serving and he's got a FTA setup too :) He might be able to help with some of what you can get

Hi johnny123

The best two services for English programming over there are SHOWTIME Arabia and ORBIT.

These are subscription service (just like DirecTV and DN here in the US). Youw ill have to buy their receiver and small dish. Since it is a subscription service, you will get a smartcard with the box.

The 40+ channels are mostly American and in English. You will have to contact one of their dealer's in JORDAN or Kuwait. I am not sure if they have a dealer in IRAQ, they might.

I definately recommend that you PM goaliebob99 since he is also in Iraq and hes got a full setup going over there. :)
