I have a viewsat ultra and i am not getting any channels at all...
I am using a k band lnbf pointing to echostar 119...
The dish is a dish network but changed the lnbf
Sat streghth is @80 and q @ 0....

Please help!

What channels are you trying to get on 119? Everything there is scrambled. And even if you put a linear lnbf on your pay-tv dish, it really isnt big enough to pick up very much (and nothing at all on that satellite, except for maybe ONE promo channel for Dish). You need a bigger dish, and possibly get a motor to move the dish, so you can enjoy free-to-air tv.

Most of those work pretty well, I have one of the older , white ones, the Direcway dish, little small but usually does a great job on most transponders on ku. What satellite are you wanting to receive with it?

Any fta channel will be a major progress...will i need to upgrade the software or the factory's is good to go?
I have been to your city...beautiful place...

You might try locking in 101 or 97 for starters. If you have that white direcway dish, you will find that it is quite accurate on the numbers, that is, the elevation scale and such are usually very close to what all the 'dishpointing' sites will give you for your location and a given satellite. It's tedious to aim one, but once you're done, it is rock solid. Be sure to set the'skew' for the satellite you are aiming for. The Direcway dish sets skew by turning the entire dish=you will see the short bolts on the adjustment scale on the back of the dish.
As far as the firmware, if whatever you have is working now, it will probably work fine for fta. Those Viewsat boxes were usually hacked, but since Dish's encryption upgrade they are now being used for what they were advertised for-free to air signals. Not the most sensitive tuner in the VS but it works as well as many other similar receivers.

I managed to get a Hughes net dish plus the lnb...will that work...
In aiming the dish, is there a gadget or is that something one has to learn?
Thanks for your help!

If you use the search function here I think you can come up with some threads with people using the Hughesnet/Direcway dishes for FTA, and I believe the stock LNBF will work fine.

As far as aiming is concerned there is a procedure to follow, and it is described in hundreds (thousands?) of threads on this site. There will be little things different with every installation but the basics are always the same.

Start with a good plumb pole and a clear line-of-sight to the satellites you want to see and go from there. Post some pics of what you have, read this site till your eyes bleed and ask lots of questions...it worked for me. ;)

Still having a tough time getting any channels, getting S=75, Q=0...aiming @ 101w

I have tried other sats like nimiq 4...still the same

Unless you have a Circular LNB installed, you will have a very hard time locking Circular Sat.

Aligning to a Linear Sat takes a little time. You MUST have the Receiver setup to the equipment being used.

Have you set the LNB to the proper skew?
Set the Dish Elevation, then sloooooooooowly turn the Dish, watching for quality.

Look for the LNB Freq on the LNB, you are looking for "L.O. 10.75" or something like that.

If at all possible, take the Receiver and a Small TV to the Dish for tuning.
Make sure you have a known Hot TP selected in the Setup Menu.

If possible, put something on the ground as a reference point for the Azimuth target.
Turn the Dish covering both sides of that target, if nothing, increase or decrease the Dish Elevation 1/2 Degree, and turn the Dish again.
And "slow" is "sloooooooooooooow" when turning the Dish
