I know that the HDMI cable outputs a HD picture, but I've also been told that the HDMI cable outputs audio. What kind of audio signal does the HDMI cable output, analog or Dolby Digital...or both?

The specs call for HDMI to carry Dolby Digital and/or PCM audio (user selectable), but the problem is that this must be HDMI to HDMI. If you go HDMI to DVI, there is no audio. The other problem is that some TVs will not pass/decode the Dolby Digital signal received over HDMI. Most of the time, you are better off running a TOSLINK or Digital Coax cable directly from the D* receiver to your AV receiver (if you have one). If you don't have an AV receiver for surround sound, there is really no benefit to sending Dolby Digital to your TV.
