I'm considering buying an HR10-250 DVR Tivo for my DirecTV service. I notice that the DVR has two satillite inputs. Is it necessary to run two cables from my antenna in order to record one channel (HD or digital) and view another channel at the same time? If not, why does this receiver have 2 inputs? I already have my antenna setup for HD reception with a 3 LNB post.

IF you want to watch a directv channel and then record another directv channel at the same time or record two directv channels at the same time you have to have to inputs from the dish. If you want to watch one directv channel and record an OTA channel or watch and record two OTA channels then you do not need the other input.
If you want the full function of watch and record you need the other input from the dish. If you dont want to do it yourself many sat dealers will do an install for less than $100
