Are HD LNB's married to their respective satallite provider or can one be used for a different satellite provider?
ie, can I use a Direct TV LNB for another satellite system?

As long as the polarization is the same, yes. D* and E* are both circular-polarized, as is Evu.
There's also the matter if the LNB's are "stacked" Dish-style or L/R CP like DirecTV. The stacked LNB's won't work with DirecTV unless a destacker is used, although I've never heard of them beign used for a home install.

There is no difference between SD and HD LNB's.

DISH LNBS will not work with DTV receivers, except for the DISH legacy LNB's which have not been used new for years. DISH Pro LNBS used for reception of 110 and 119 (DPTwin, DPP and DPQuad) will not work with DTV receivers even with a destacker because the DTV receivers do not have the ability to control the LNB's internal switching.

Here is some detailed information about DISH LNBs. Click the link at the bottom of the first page for an even more detailed explanation of DISH LNB technology
