Ive read that on some of the user's boxes with external Hd's that the box must remain on for a recording to occur. Is this the same with HD DVR's as well? I know those record while the box is off (in stand bye) and was just curious before purchasing a external drive.

i'm not exactly sure what you're asking but with my ViP622, recordings happen even if the box is turned "off" and if I initiate a transfer to or from the external drive, I can turn the box "off" after doing so and it will complete normally.

It is supposed to record even with the receiver in standby if your asking if the receiver is supposed to remain on.
If your asking about the EHD then it depends on your EHD. If it doesn't have it's own power source or if it has a sleep mode that makes the EHD turn off after a certain period of time then you have to turn it off or it will not record.

Hope it helps. ;)

thanks for the reply. I have a ViP612 and wanted to add a external drive to have more recording time. Just wanted to make sure I could plug it in and record as usual or do I record to my DVR then transfer to external hard drive?

all recording is done to the internal DVR drive, then you can use the "my media" function to transfer.

Yeah, you will have to record it to the IHD first and then you can xer it over to the EHD. At this point the only receiver that is able to record straight to the EHD is not a DVR at all but the 211/K.

I have two 500gb WD My Essential book hard drives and both work flawlessly with my 722 and my 211. No problems.

I wish u could recorded stuffs u have in ur external harddrive watch it in someone house in his/her TV ..like connect the WD media player to external harddrive then tv... but looks like or i dont know cant do that with that WD tv media player cant read the files onlys reads computer files..such as sux..u wanna show off ur recording some where else too.
