You ask 10 people what deals they got and you'll probably get 10 different answers. The best thing you can do is call D* and at the voice prompt say cancel service, this gets you to customer retention, the folks that have the ability to give the best deals. Just nicely say you would like to upgrade to a HD DVR and stay with DirecTV but the large upfront charge is a problem and is there anything they can do to lower that price, especially since Dish and your cable company don't have a up front charge. If you get a deal you like take it, if not just say no thanks, wait a few hours and call back asking again, getting a different CSR can also effect the deal.
