Toshiba (Japan) has released v2.8 firmware update for the HD-XF2 and HD-XA2 HD DVD players released in Japan.
Among other improvements and changes, this firmware update also adds HD DVD-R playback.

Video content burned onto an HD DVD-R disc (conforming to applicable HD DVD and AACS specifications) can now be played back on both players. For instance, TV programmes recorded on a HD DVD-R disc by Toshiba's VARDIA HD DVD/HDD DVR can now be played back on both HD DVD players.

Do expect similar firmware update being announced for HD DVD players released in other countries... probably within the next few weeks.

Yup. Both formats media is way too high right now. You can buy the movies on sale cheaper than burning your own

It was like that for a long time with DVD. Hell, it almost still is that way with DL vs. catching a movie on sale.

A BOGO free catalog HDM title at Amazon is cheaper than a blank BD25 or HD15 much less a BD50 or HD30.

Free?? Free? Oh no Ive had many lectures on how BOGO (Buy ONE get ONE) doesnt mean free but 1/2 price rather, sorta like 2+2 = 5 YA KNOW?

I'm pretty sure I got the v2.8 disc in the mail late last year.

Do you have a Japan model? 2.7 is current for the USA models.

My recollection was in error. I do in fact have 2.7. Now that I think about it, they seem to send me the odd numbered revisions on disc.

There never was a 2.4 or 2.6 if I recall.
