Question, what kind of PQ can you expect from one lenses that reads both formats?

If the lens can read the data stream, it should not affect PQ. The only way it will affect PQ is if it misses data from the stream, and I would find it difficult to believe that they would announce a lens that reads both, if it only reads 98% of the data.

Question, why would Toshiba be involved in making a hybrid player that would support BluRay?
Because ultimately it will speed up the death of BluRay. Once BD supporters see with their own eyes that HD DVD is better PQ and cheaper they will abandon BD as will the studios. If you had one of these players and you had a copy of any of the titles that the two formats have in common, which one would you play? and which one would you ebay?

Finally, a solution to the format wars. Only time will tell if this works:

And from the Samsung and Toshiba camps -- another hybrid!

These rumors about Samsung dual format player appeared back in June and immediately after that, Samsung has issued this official statement:

“Samsung Electronics is fully committed to the Blu-ray format and currently only has plans to introduce a Blu-ray player to the market.”

Also, since then LG has scrapped its dual-format player plans (see: http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?t=72616)

As for Ricoh, they have developed a multi-format pickup (see http://www.satelliteguys.us/showthread.php?t=70813), but do not expect any hybrid player from them at least for another year. As far as I understand, they have not announced the player yet, only plans to develop it. And a lot of things may happen between now and then, so don't hold your breath yet!
