TOKYO — Toshiba Corp. and Memory-Tech Corp. have developed a three-layered hybrid DVD/HD-DVD ROM disk that would enable the reading of two data formats on a single-sided disk.

Very cool; 3 layers, can either be 2 layers DVD (DVD-9) and 1 layer HD DVD (15GB), or 1 layer DVD (4.5GB) and 2 layer HD DVD (30GB) on the same side. Just shows off the versatility of the HD DVD format. I know a lot of HD DVD owners absolutely HATE the "combo discs" ( HD DVD SL 15 GB on one side, DL DVD-9 on the other), saying they don't like the high prices fro combo disc, and object to paying extra for the DVD version they don't want. I like the combo concept - I can watch the HD DVD on my XA1 and family or friends can borrow it to watch the DVD version. I just don't like the "flippers" - too hard to handle without getting finger prints on one side, and my old eyes almost need a magnifying glass to read the tiny label on the inside ring. Everything on one side would be a great improvement. :up IN all honesty, I have to admit I have not purchased a combo yet, but primarily because I didn't care for the movie enough to buy it. But, I do have the "Slither"combo on pre-order for Oct. 24, and looking forward to it.

And, to speculate, if they can do 3 layers with a combo of DVD & HD DVD, can triple layer HD DVD with a total of 45 GB capacity be far off?

I agree, this is good news. Combo discs are still useful. I only have one HD-DVD player, but many DVD players (including the computer, and portable unit).
