HD channels not HD?

There is a way to undo linear stretch-o-vision by changing your HDTV settings. On my 2 displays, changing the HDTV setup to 480p shrinks a 16:9 image down to 4:3. I don't like using it, but do use it occasionally to watch a stretch-o-vision program. You have to change it back to your previous setting (720p or 1080i) to properly display true HD channels.

Really? I thought that just cropped the edges off just like the greybar function with the zoom remote. It could be the way your displays work. My Mitsubishi will unstretch/zoom/stretch 480i/p but will only stretch 720p/1080i. My Westinghouse will only stretch.

Might do the job but keep in mind at 480 you are not watching HD anymore.

He/She wasn't watching HD to begin with--just upscaled SD. If it were really HD, the programmers wouldn't need to stretch it.

To undo linear stretch-o-vision, I changed the HDTV settings on my 722 satellite receiver. Press "Menu", "6" (System Setup), then "8" (HDTV setup) to change HDTV settings.

Obviously, the 480p setting cannot produce an HD image, but as allargon noted, the programs I've watched in stretch-o-vision weren't HD to begin with. The resulting image is more watchable than stretch-o-vision which I can't stand.
