What is the best indoor HDTV antenna for over the air reception of local HD stations?

It depends on where you are located, usually if your channels are in the UHF band then you could use a Silver Sensor, but if you are too far away from the transmitters then you will need to use an outdoor antenna.

Any good brand indoor antenna will do you. The Silver Sensor gets good reviews. Also if you have an old indoor antenna at home try that first. There really is no such thing as a "hd" antenna, just a new marketing tool.

Silvor Sensor is good, but not amplified. Radio Shack sells an amplified loop UHF/VHF antenna for $30 that I've found also works well.

Also need to keep in mind the separation or beam width, of YOUR local broadcast antennas. Indoors like the Silver Sensor have a narrow field of view; to the point of being called very directional. So if your locals are spaced out or maybe in near opposite directions; depending on the distances, these very directional models can become near useless. I would almost always recommend trying UHF antennas like the Channel Master CM4228, CM4221, or Winegard PR 4400, PR8800, or Terrestrial Digital DB8, DB4. AND get that antenna outside if at all possible; don't worry about neighbors or HOAs.

I'd love to put my antenna outside, but I'm in an apt. on the second floor, on the side of the building that faces southwest, the complete opposite direction from where the signals are coming.

I'm 30 miles southwest of Chicago, from where the SD and HD signals are beamed. My balcony faces southwest and is right off my living room where my antenna is located. It's an indoor amplified one and gets some, but not all, my local OTA channels. If putting an antenna outside would help, I'd do it, but doing so means having it 5 feet farther away, on the other side of the balcony doors.
