I've had the dish installed here at my new house for about 6 months now, and recently i was unable to get any HD channels, even the local ones, so I went to my signal levels and saw that on 99(a) and 99(b), as well as 103(a) and 103(b), I have 0's across the board. These used to come in just fine, in fact I had 80-90 signal strength. Assuming it was new growth, i went out and cut down all of the vegetation that looked like it might be in the way, with no luck. I re-peaked the dish using my Accutrac 22, peaking to 101 on the coarse alignment, peaking to 119 on the tilt, then peaking again on 101 for the fine tuning on elevation and azimuth dither (using the half clockwise/counterclockwise method). Again, all according to the install guide. No luck there either. im still sitting at 0's on the Ka beams.

So, I decided to completely remount the dish. Did so, in a similar location but in a better direct line of sight to the sky in my opinion. Got it all up, leveled, mast extended, dish mounted, re-coarse aligned, re-fine tuned, came down to check signal strength and I am able to get a few channels in HD, like TNT, ESPN, etc. But not any of the locals. And 103(a/b) and 99(a/b) are all sitting at zero.

I live in San Diego, so I know I should be getting spot beams on 103(a), as thats where my local HD programs come from.

I am stumped.

101, 110, and 119 are all very good. the signals are peaked, just as you would expect them to be after a proper re-peaking.

Signal levels:

101
1-8: 94 94 94 0 94 97 93 97
9-16: 94 95 94 0 94 98 93 98
17-24: 87 100 88 0 94 98 94 98
25-32: 94 0 90 100 95 98 95 100

110
8: 95
10: 95
12:95

119
22-24: 0 0 94
25-32: 91 95 94 94 0 94 0 95

99(a)

1-8: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
9-14: 0 0 0 0 0 0

99(b)
All 0

103(a)
All 0

103(b)
All 0

Any ideas?

Or the BBC's went bad.

i was thinking this also. although, would i get 0 signal strength on Ka birds if the BBC went bad?

YOU lost the aim on the Ka birds call D* and pay for a reinstallation.

I actually have the equipment plan so it would be free, but its going to take forever for them to get out here because their schedule is booked solid. I'm thinking it isnt that i lost the Ka signal, because this happened before I even moved the dish.

In regards to BBC's... Do i have to order one from DirecTV or can I get one from like Radio Shack or something?

Would it make more sense that the BBC went bad if I still get certain HD channels, but only the ones that are in Mpeg4 dont work...

Yep. sure enough.

iwc thanks for pointing it out, i actually probably wouldve checked the bbc last if you hadnt mentioned it. took it to a friends house and swapped, his mpeg4 hd channels were mysteriously missing also.

now, how do i get a new one quickly? i know dtv gives em out like candy, for free even... but i dont know how long its gonna take for them to send one...

id pay 10 bucks, 15 even, to spare going without local hd for 4 weeks or however long its gonna take dtv to send my bbc.

NP. I usually try the KISS method when trouble shooting, and go for the easiest things to fix first.

I don't know how long it will take D* to ship you new BBC's, but you have a couple of options in the meantime. 1) temporarily borrow one of your friend's BBC's until yours comes in or 2) keep your eye out for a D* installer working in your area and stop and ask him for a couple.

Well, I used the ""DirecTV free b-band converter request form" and they said 10-14 days.

Called D* and told them i knew for a fact my b-band converter was bad, after they did the obligatory technical support they said they would send a repair tech out in 2 weeks because of the overwhelming demand in my area. I said, "look, I know its the b-band converter... can you just send me one" and they said "sure thing, it should be there in 3 days." This was Monday. It actually came today, Tuesday. I love it! Fixed my problem too. I'm stoked.

Congrats! It's nice to see that not all CSR's are idiots reading from a script. Hopefully, they are still shipping you the ones you requested on line so that you will have some spares for the future.
