Has your view on Platinum Changed

Great news today on all the HD adds!!!, on another note has your view of the platinum package changed now with the adds.

Well, I applaud there being more channels now.

But, no, for me, it really doesn't change much in terms of wanting to keep that package.

If its just BET, then why do they call it Jazz. Also, why do they call it HD. I haven't seen any Jazz or HD since it was added.

They haven't called it "Jazz" in quite a while. Just "J".

I would assume this is a holdover from when MTV attempted to do this letter thing with a few channels. (AKA "MTV S" for Spanish.)

And there's no HD because they haven't even launched an HD feed yet. And I will stop saying that if anyone produces any evidence to the contrary.

The only channels of value in the package are NBA TV and NHL Network, but they are definately not worth $5/channel.

See this is STILL the problem with this package. I feel the same way with HDNet Movies and (barely) MGM. It's too many different things that appeal to different people.

I wonder what would happen if they sold NBA/NHL/WFN/MavTV in one $4 package, HDMov/MGM in another $4 package, and everything else in a third $4 package. I bet they'd make way more, and all the channels would get more subscribers overall. It seems like everyone likes SOMETHING in the package, they just don't like it $10 worth.

So true! Indeed, I'd be glad to pay half the price for just the half of the channels I want.

Granted, I suppose that's inching towards ala-carte packaging which has detractors.

But I wonder if there is a model in there somewhere. Not ala-cart individual channels, but maybe ala-cart themes of some sort.

My experience based on my viewing habbits (primarily movies).

In the days of Voom (when it had a different name): Totally worth it.
Until recently: Worth it for two channelsL HDNet Movies, which is a tad repetitive but no more than other premiums and makes a real effort to show interesting films in their correct aspect ratio, unedited and commercial free. And MGM HD, which has an great lineup and showed a lot of good movies, usually in OAR.
In the past couple weeks: With MGM HD showing (short but nevertheless unacceptable to me) commercial breaks, HDNet Movies is the only channel I want it the package. Great, but compared to the days of World Cinema and Film Fest HD, plus HD La Liga matches, it ain't much at all.

Okay, I've watched some of several different shows on MaxTV... and the whole thing - despite HD cameras - is barely above the level of Youtube, and in fact, some homemade Youtube videos are better produced, directed and acted than anything on MaxTV. Combine that with content and writing that is aimed at the lowest (and I mean lowest) common denominator, and you have MoronTV.

For example, the "Bikini Allstars" show consists of taking bikini models an hour north of Los Angeles to the Palmdale area where they stand around and giggle... and also giggle and stand around... amidst a relatively bleak and ugly landscape. It actually made HD-Net's "Bikini Destinations" seem like Masterpiece Theater in comparison.

Then there was a program where grooms go on stag batchelor parties that are filmed, and the bride is shown the video and is supposed to act outraged.... to call that moronic is overrating it...

FashionTV at least has high production values... the "FW" (Fashion Week) shows are the serious part - they have the runway shows of the actual fashion collections.

Not that I see

Here's a hint...

AFAIK Dish has provided EVERY new HD channel added to the HD Platinum package in 2009 to those of us that some seem to consider to be Dish HD "bottom feeders" -- HD Absolute subs (like me) -- that are still only paying $29.99 for ALL of our (non local/premium) HD Channels :)

The following are not in Absolute :
BET, FX, FXNEWS, MTV, NICK,SPEED, & VH1.
But it still isn't enough for me to change to something else yet. What package has these? I looked at the list of HD channels for Dish & didn't see them listed.

Gold: (8-9 channels)
Bio
Hallmark Movie
Nat Geo
Planet Green
Science
Tennis
Vs
Encore
(eventually/possibly - Fox Business News)

Platinum: (11 Channels)
Bet-J
C&I
FTV
HGNet Movies
Logo
Mav
MGM
NBA
NHL
Universal
WFN

Sadly, I think if I was ever forced from Absolute, I'd be more likely to take Silver w/ Plat, over Gold. I had Encore for a while with Starz and didn't watch it near as often as I do HDNet Movies. I'll watch MGM, Universal, and C&I more than I would watch Nat Geo and Vs. But the three additional channels would make no difference pro or con.

I like this idea!. Maybe add the sports channels to the current sports pack??

I love The Mav HD Channel. Tons of Different Racing. Tons of HD.
Like All HD.:hungry:

So far, I have not seen any HD.

It is all 16x9 filling the screen.

It is all zoomed from regular SD cameras, and some cameras even less than SD, because they have a lot of cell phone footage...:(

The Bikiini Allstars was appallingly bad quality, it looked like a 1992 camcorder...

PS I confess that I have not watched any racing on MavTV, as I would be more interested in seeing the sort of events shown on Speed.... although at the moment, two NBA playoff games a day is more sports than I have time for... hard to find better sports performance at the moment than LeBron...

With MGM HD showing (short but nevertheless unacceptable to me) commercial breaks

Hmmm...actual breaks during the movie? Or between movies?

I guess I don't care as long as it's unedited. I usually just DVR movies and save them up for Sunday afternoon anyway.

You forgot FoxBusiness and Encore HD. Looks like 9 of the national HD's that E* offers are not in the Absolute package (basically all of them that platinum doesn't have, except Encore).

My view of Platinum hasn't changed, it's still not worth it. I'd have to pay $10 more for only one channel I don't already get and I'd loose a bunch of channels I already get.

Ummm.... I realize that HD Absolute subs have not gotten all the HD channels Dish has added.. For example, we haven't gotten the channels you listed. BUT...Are these channels part of the Platinum Package which is the subject of this thread and my reply?

I am assuming I'll lose the NHL Network feed from Center Ice once the subscription is done for the season, so I was thinking about keeping the multi-sport pack to keep access to the NHL network. With the addition of MavTV I've decided to drop the sports pack and add Platinum for the offseason, getting the NHL network in HD as a bonus.

The 3 months free offer for Platinum made this an even better deal.

Um dude. Go to your ALL HD guide and look at all of the non-premium HD channels you don't get.

I never posted that HD Absolute subs get "all the non-premium HD channels" DUDE!

What I posted is that AFAIK in 2009 HD Absolute subs have gotten ALL of the HD channels added to the (read this carefully dude) PLATINUM PACKAGE that is the subject of this thread-- just in case you didn't read the title :)
