Hard Drive Bargain Watch

Just enabled EHD on my account. Trying to decide between two drives:

- Western Digital Elements 500 GB (available from Newegg for $55 shipped)
- Iomega Prestige 1TB (available from Staples for $59 + tax, OOS online)

On price for capacity, the Iomega has the obvious edge. However, I'm simply not as familiar with Iomega, with regard to their hard drives. One edge for the WD is that it spins down its drive when not being accessed, something I have not verified yet for the Iomega.

Thoughts?

I have both.

The Iomega is on my 211k as the MAIN drive. No problems so far. The Elements are awesome, though ( I have at least 5 of those). Your choice.

Thanks for the responses.

I ended up going with a 1TB WD Elements drive. Buy.com has them in stock for $57.24 shipped (and I used a cash back site for an extra few bucks).

That's a great price. Have you purchased items from Buy.com before? Any comments from you or others on Buy.com? I'm thinking of taking advantage of that price on the same HDD.
Thanks,

I have. I don't shop there a whole lot, perhaps once or twice a year. However, I've never had an issue with them before. Their standard (free) shipping isn't terribly speedy, but expedited is only $5 or $6, on items like hard drives, if you choose. I'd definitely consider them when comparing items - this isn't the first time I've found an item at a lower price there. Plus, they accept Google Checkout, Paypal and eBillme in addition to the standard payment options.

Never had to deal with their CS much though - so I can't speak to that.

If you don't use a cashback site already, I'd recommend it. Saved an extra 4% going through FW.

You're welcome, Ghpr13.

I guess I'm about to eat my words about their standard/free shipping. My order is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. It appears that it was fulfilled through a regional distribution center (2 states away, most of my previous orders came from CA if I recall), so that likely helped.

The Tony,
I'm upset. I went to buy.com this morning to order that HDD and it was off sale! Damn! That's what I get for hesitating...It's up to $73 w/shipping...You made a good choice Tony! Enjoy!!

1 TB WD for $44.99 at Newegg(recertified)

I Just installed a 1TB WD Green(recertified) with a Diablotek drive dock. Its my first EHD because I just couldn't justify the $40 enable fee. I know recertified hardware scares some but not me. Some of my best hardware has been recertified or refurbished

I'm curious--has anyone tried a 3 TB drive yet? There's one on sale at Fry's this week for $139.99... I can't tell if it has a single LUN or not--it appears to be a Segate Expansion STAY3000100.

possibly off topic-can you hook up ps3 or a dvd player with a hard drive?

Can u hook up a PS3 or a LG blu ray player that has a internal hard drive to a 622 and then "dump" programming onto it from the 622 and play it back?

There are 2TB externals for $90 and even $80 from non-Seagate makers.

I had my eye on a 2TB raw drive for $70 from Amazon but i'm not willing to wait 1-2 months or pay twice as much from others. Are they handmade? (Referred from DealMac.com.)

3TB is no sanctioned, yet. There may be file system problems with software in using more than 2TB, certainly for more than 4TB.

Remember that "2TB" is 2*1000^4 (decimal), and not computer style 2*1024^4 (binary). And the software boundary is likely the latter.

The 622 will only accept ATSC OTA and satellite inputs. It outputs HDMI with HDCP or analog component. So either way you go there is no connection, unless you have analog-to-digital converters for your external recorder, not seen cheaply. I'm assuming you are speaking of HD.

You can record off the Dish SD outputs but that's SD. The Dish EHD is encrypted. Don't know about the internal disk.

It would require capturing the internal and making files with proper formatting from them to put on an external digital recorder, or reversing that for putting your Blu-ray on the Dish disk. Would like it but way too much work and probably illegal.
