Why would the guide download at 8 in the morning if it was idle since midnight?

It just grabs it at random times while its idle. I wouldn't be surprised if it grabbed it overnight as well.

I've seen the guide updated at virtually any hour of the night or day.

If standby is set to 8 hours and you left at midnight........

It is set for 4 hours.
