Hey, this is satellite related, I almost feel it should go into the General Satellite Forum on here.
Anyways, to harness even more space beams from the many satellites up there, I bought myself a handheld GPS receiver. I chose the Garmin eTrex Legend and so far I love the thing. I got a good deal on an accessories bundle package including the GPS receiver, data cable, MapSource 3-disc topographic & other details CD, protective carrying case & strap, cigarette lighter power adaptor, dash mount kit, and instructional video.
Supposedly the Garmins (and specifically, eTrex) have good third-party support in Linux. Has anyone tried it? Ideally I would hook it up to my PowerBook but then it would have to go through an RS232-USB adaptor (doable and supported in OS-X), and I'd probably end up porting "gpspoint" or whatever latest Linux software to OS-X (most likely simple, depending on the differences in the serial port APIs). It would be a nice TuxStitched solution unless there is good Mac OS-X software. Or it could finally give me good reason to just put Linux on there alongside OS-X.
If anyone else here has an eTrex Legend or another eTrex, and has used it on non-Windows platforms, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Or if you just have some neat "tips & tricks" I'd like to hear those too.
(dammit, vB lowercased my title... )
