Gmail not working on new IPhone 6

Curious about this. I have 5 email accounts on my iPhone but only gmail and iCloud set to push. Push is working for me on both accounts.

My gmail used to be set to push as well but this is no longer an option for me. I think I lost it when I upgraded to a newer phone. Maybe they let people who currently had it set up keep it but stopped allowing people to set it up to push going forward.

When I look at my mail settings in iOS the "fetch new data" setting is set to push. If I tap on that setting it shows that this is only true for apps that use iCloud though. My gmail account only has "fetch" or "manual" as selectable choices. Mine is set to fetch every 15 minutes which is plenty for me. If the message is urgent enough that it can't wait 15 minutes they can text or call me.

My bad you are correct. As you said with a fetch interval set it behaves more or less like push.

To be clear, I'm pretty sure the iPhone mail app still supports push email if you have an email provider that offers it. It's not just limited to iCloud email. Gmail just stopped providing push email support for free email users a few years ago. They have it limited to companies who pay for enterprise gmail support now.

Thanks for the tip on the fetch feature I will have to look into that setting. Currently my phone only pushes new mail when I open the mail app.

The Gmail app has no ads (today)

After reading this I've decided to give the Gmail app another chance. I have deleted the default mail app and put the Gmail app in it's normal place at the bottom of my home screen. I'll try using the Gmail app exclusively for at least a few days and see if it integrates with the rest of the iPhone's features and apps any better than it did a few years ago.

Edit: I can already see that if I click an email address from the iPhones contact list there is still no way to make this open the Gmail app. It just asks me to download the Apple Mail app again. I'm not sure this actually matters since I already have my contacts and calendars synced with my gmail account anyways. All of my contacts from my iPhone are showing up correctly in the Gmail app because I have them synced.

I also found this. It seems like push support for Gmail is coming back with iOS 11.

Does iOS allow changing the 'default' app for anything ? I deleted the stock mail app as well but I typically don't send new mail from my phone so it hasn't been a big deal for me (yet). I do read mail and will occasionally reply from my phone but that's all.

Heh, and just today I changed the 'poll' or fetch time to (15) minutes. It still refreshes when I open the app to show new messages though. Unless those messages happened to come in in the past (14) minutes after I checked (15) minutes ago (in a perfect scenario !), it doesn't appear to be working right.

I don't think so. Hopefully that comes eventually but I'm not holding my breath. The most frustrating example of this for me is Apple Music and my Chevy's infotainment system. I blame both Apple and GM for this problem.

I subscribe to Microsoft's Groove Music and don't use iTunes/Apple Music at all anymore. I use bluetooth audio from my phone or XM radio 95% of the time when I'm driving and this works perfectly. If I plug my iPhone in because I want to use the maps on my car's touch screen or my phone just needs to be charged the car immediately opens up Apple Music and starts playing my iTunes library in alphabetical order.

This happens even when I had Pocket Casts open playing a podcast or Groove music playing before I plugged in the USB. I can grab my phone and switch back to Pocket Casts or Groove Music to get the audio I want but the car's screen keeps displaying the song that was playing in iTunes. If I want the display to work correctly I have to use Bluetooth and my car doesn't give me the option to do that when my phone is plugged in via USB.

As if this wasn't annoying enough, it always starts playing the same song when I plug my phone in. It just happens to be a song I don't like very much with lots of profanity that was part of an album I bought over 10 years ago. If I have co-workers in my car with me and we need to use the GPS it's always a race to change the audio before it gets embarrassing.

I have tried deleting the Apple Music app from my phone completely because I don't use it at all. The problem is that when I do this my car doesn't recognize my phone as an audio device when it is plugged in via USB anymore. There doesn't seem to be any way to remove songs I own from my iTunes library either. I can delete them from my devices but then it just streams the audio.

Hmm... The fetch every 15 minutes setting always seemed to work for me. I guess I never tried timing it but it was never noticeably slow for me.

I may have spoke too soon regarding the fetch/push setting. I'll keep an eye on it.

My phone/car does the same thing but it doesn't autoplay, if I'm not mistaken. I believe there may be a setting for autoplay on/off in our (Ford MyTouch). It does launch the Music app but it seems to start up and go into 'pause' mode.

I can't say for certainty because of the way iOS obfuscates settings, but under Accounts and Passwords, Fetch New Data is set to "Push", but it doesn't appear to be related to Gmail. In fact, under the "Push" setting, there's a "Gmail>Contacts, Calendars" setting that is set to "Fetch". Where is "Gmail>Mail" setting ???

All this said, when I open Gmail now, instead of flicker and refreshing, then new messages pop up, any new messages are already there. The app icon's 'unread' message count updates in the background as well. I think it may be working....

I read your post above too quickly. The "push" function is supposed to be working for Gmail accounts when using the iOS Mail app only. I'm not sure of any change that helps the Gmail app itself.

Yeah. The Gmail app was already instant for me. I have been using it for a few weeks now instead of the iOS mail app and I haven't felt the need to go back. If anything the Gmail app seems a little snappier.

I also had a weird bug with the iOS mail app where if I deleted emails to quickly after opening the app they would come back. It was pretty annoying when trying to delete a bunch of junk mail I didn't need to take the time to open first.

Mine has reverted back to not loading emails in the background again. The app icon is updating to indicate the proper number of new messages on the Google end though. I changed something that seemed to "fix" it but then I changed another setting it appears that broke it. Can you share your settings ? Under "Fetch New Data", I have:

Push (on)
Gmail (Mail, Contacts, Calendars) > Fetch > Fetch (checked) | other option is Manual
Fetch > Automatically (checked) | other options are Manual, Hourly, 15 minutes, 30 minutes

Under Settings, Gmail, I have "Background App Refresh" enabled as well as "Cellular Data" enabled.
