Getting shows on an ipod? Possible?

I was wondering if there is a way to get shows onto an ipod besides connecting the dvr to a tuner card and then transferring it?

Any chance the 622's and 722's will get something like tivo to go with the purchase of sling that could make this possible?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

J

I have two suggestions:

1) Pocketdish, if you can find one! Obviously that's not an ipod...
2) The Yahoo group DishRip. Note that PVRExplorer Pro currently does not rip MPEG4 videos...

Let me tell you about Pocket Dish.

1. There are three sizes but two are sold out. The one remaining model is still for sale through the Dish web site. They have generous hard drives and hold quite a lot.

2. You can hook all of them up to a ViP622 or ViP722 via USB2.0 and download a one hour TV show in less than 10 minutes. They can also take video downloads from a 522 also but since it has an older slower USB1.1 connection it takes about 40 minutes to download 60 minutes of TV.

3. You can download any file from your computer via USB and there are converters to make nearly any video (including ipod) viewable and any MP3 file listenable.

4. THEY CAN ONLY TAKE STANDARD DEFINITION MATERIAL AND NO DISH DVR CAN CONVERT AN HD RECORDED SHOW INTO SD SO IT CAN BE PUT ON THESE CURRENT POCKET DISH MODELS.

5. Dish has announced there will be new models in time for Christmas and it is **ASSUMED** they will deal with HD material in some manner.

6. Both the current and future models are made by Archos but the current models are branded "Pocket Dish". Not so for the future models; they will carry the "Archos" brand.

I have a 7" model and it works very well. It's too bad the lying bastards at Dish sold it to me less than a year ago knowing full well that almost all the top channels were going HD and that anyone who owned a 622 or 722 would want to record everything he could in HD and thus have little or nothing to transfer to a PocketDIsh. And they have NO plans to change the situation so I have a $300.00 drink coaster.

I guess you can tell I'm very very bitter about this.

I can tell you that xvid avi files from bittorrent and OTA recorded on your PC play very well on the PocketDish. My 7 incher is still quite busy.

The Neuros isnt a portable player like teh Ipod or Pocket Dish would be... a cool product, but not in the same category.

edit - but it is another option for the getting things to an IPod.. so i did jump the gun.

This is true.

Jman, Don't confuse my bitterness about the thieves at E* with my opinion about PocketDishes.

8bit turned me onto xvid and reminded me that PDs have a video input so you can record from a HD DVR using the component (yellow) video output and he is right on. There are a lot of uses for the current PDs.

My PD has a lithium ion battery that is changeable, a remote control and a docking station for video capture. There is also a compoent video output and included cable adapters so you can show PD files on a regular TV. It also serves as a digital picture storage device and viewer and mp3 player.

It's a well made piece of hardware that a lot of people will find a lot of uses for and it DOES have the ability to show E* video if you plan ahead of time or happen to want a SD only show like those on SciFi or TBS. You could fill it with everything on Dish with the Exception of the few HD only channels (Voom channels). But you MUST decide before the fact whether or not you want to record something in HD for your big HDTV or SD for your PD (or set two timers and record both versions).

Again: PocketDish; good. E*; crooks.

Now was it a case that they LIED to you? Or as in the case with most instances with Dish, the reps you dealt with didnt know or had bad information?

Did it say in the specs it COULD do HD? It doesnt now, and really knowing the difference in formats, tuners, etc, I would never assume it could unless it said it could.

How about dubbing the material off to a DVD recorder, then ripping the DVD w/ Toast (if you have a Mac; recommend CloneDVD2 if you're on a PC) straight to your iPod.

A 2-step process but it works and it's worked for me (straight to PSP, but same principle)...

You're not a law school graduate are you???

My story is that I saw it introduced on a Charlie chat:

"Boy this thing is great. You plug it right into your 622 and get your shows in a few minutes"
and
"it will work on the 522 but not as well but it's really designed to work best with the 622."

Point is, when you watch the images on a screen that small--HD is overkill. A nicely downrezzed file/dub is going to look just fine.

HD is only HD if your screen can do it justice. Otherwise its wasted information.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have a brand new iPod Touch and a 722 which is just awesome and would like to get shows on there. A friend of mine has an older ipod and tivo to go and he's always got shows he doesn't have time to watch at home with him. It would be nice for us to have the option of watching it on our own portable device of choice without any extra hardware like a tivo as the 722 in most ways I believe is far superior.

Any ideas as to the possibilities with the purchase of sling?

Thanks again,

J

True true true!

And wouldn't you think when you want to put an HD show on your PocketDish you should be able to just select SD output? After all HD recordings can be sent in SD mode to a regular TV from component video, Svideo or via coax on a bunch of different channels. But NOOOO! HD programs can't leave the USB port in any thing but HD mode and the current PDs won't accept it (or to be more accurate, the DVR refuses to let it happen - copyright issues).

I use an EyeTV USB2 video input device to get the recorded stuff from the VIP622 onto my mac, then I use handbrake to convert it to a format more suitable for the iPod. It works very well, assuming you have a mac.
