Longhorn,
Were did you get the boxee software that sound like something i would like to check out myself?.
PS: Is this something for mac only
Anyways great to here about the good outcome with your laptop Scott i have 1 i may just send them to get fixed.
First when reading all the information below you may "not" need to download and use the TVRow application so I would skip this step and install TVRow at the end "only" if what you want cannot be done with all the other steps. I know eveything below is very long and seems very complex but its one of the easiest things I've ever done but I'm giving every specific hurdle I came across so it can be as easy as pie.
These are the step by step guides with download links that worked for me. This is based on having an intel iMac and as such it may or may not work using say a Mac Mini for example as I don't know.
First things first you need to setup a front row plugin for boxee which simply adds a menu item within the front row interface for boxee.
You need to download this file below...
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/249503/FrontBoxee.frappliance.zip
Unzip the file above and you should have one file named Boxee.frappliance. You need to copy this into a specific folder.
First open finder and click on your main mac hard drive (ie iMac).
Double click on the System Folder.
Click on the Library Folder.
Click on the CoreServices Folder.
Find the FrontRow.app "file" and right click it and select show package contents.
Click on the Contents Folder.
Click on the PlugIns Folder.
Now copy the file Boxee.frappliance file into the PlugIns Folder.
Now goto boxee: the open, connected, social media center for mac os x and linux and click on the Join Now link to register to download. You will get an email nearly right away to download the dmg file and just double click to install it like any mac program. Also after you first install the program you will need to sign in with your username and password to access any features and content and the login will fail "until" you check for another email to activate your boxee account.
Keep in mind everything is free so don't worry about that.
Now download the file below called TVRow.
http://sites.google.com/site/robijnx/products/tvrow201/TVRow2.0.1.dmg?attredirects=0
Just install the program and use these settings.
Set Display to 2nd Display.
Set Movie Trailers to HD if you have an HDTV set connected to your mac via an HD connection.
I also needed to setup my mac to mirror the displays so I could set my internal mac monitor to a resolution of 1680x1050 and set my secondary display at 1280x720. Once I had each set I need to disable the mirror feature.
Now once you go into the boxee software you need to configure it with a couple of things.
Once the main boxee interface opens showing the Welcome page you need to move the mouse to the left side of the screen to open the boxee menu or use the left button on the apple remote.
Select settings by moving down the list.
Under Settings select Appearance.
Scroll down and select Screen.
Click Select with Resolution highlighted until you see an option like this below.
1280x720 (Full Screen #2) and use that option.
Within the main "Screen" window you can also under the Display Blanking section select if your primary (iMac internal screen) will be blacked out (show a black screen) or Disabled.
I have mine set to disabled as my internal iMac display still shows my mac desktop even when something from Boxee is displayed. Anything played via the boxee interface is played only on the external display.
To setup Netflix with boxee you need to sign into your boxee account online and select the Account option on the left hand side. Scroll down to the very bottom of the list and select the authorize option for Netflix and follow the steps. Once you try and access Netflix watchnow from Boxee you still need to select the sign in option and use the onscreen keyboard feature before you can browse titles and view your queue. All the above steps won't need to be done twice as everything is remembered for you the next time.
I also believe that Youtube playback might be having issues causing the software to crash so keep that in mind. Also know this is alpha software but it feels and acts far more like a good beta program with very few issues overall. The best alpha software I've ever used to date.
