Getting another 722k receiver - what to do to activate it?

A newbie to DishNetwork here, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

I'm getting another Vip722k receiver to record more than 3 channels at the same time. I'm not going through Dish to get this receiver since I don't want to extend my contract and pay a rental fee for the receiver.

Once I buy it, what do I have to do to activate it? Can I use one of my existing HD receivers and stick the card in the new receiver?

You will need to call dish and add it to your account. You cannot take/use the smartcard from a different receiver. You will pay the same additional $17 per month as you would with a leased 722

Also before you waste your money buying a useless receiver get the R00# and call DISH to be sure it can be activated on your account. There are leased receivers offered for sale, there are receivers with outstanding balances that must be paid off before activation.
