The wife and I were at a garage sale yesterday and the guy had 3 DirecTV receivers their for sale. He had a HR22(Glossy Black), H20(silver) and a R15. He wanted $100 for all 3(with 3 extra remotes) as he switched to Dish over 2 years ago. The wife wanted to buy them, but I said that they where probably all leased units. The guy was trying to tell me no they were all owned, so I said ok if you don't mind I will wright down the serial#'s & card#'s go over to the car and call DirecTV to see if they are leased or owned then we would talk. Then he says no its not ok and either we want them or we don't, so I said pass. Although I did end up buying the 3 extra remotes for $10 and left.

You made the right move ...

I thought so since I want to replace my H24 with a HR44 later on in the summer anyway, and I have yet to wear out a remote but I thought it can't hurt to have a few extras on hand.

The R15 would be the most logical one to be "owned" as Directv is phasing them out

The H20...maybe
The HR22...doubt it

I don't think the H20 has much value anymore .... wonder if it was the one that ran hot, maybe he could have activated that one and they may have offered him a new one ?

For some reason, if the recvr is an older unit, when you turn them off, D* will often say that they don't need it back... I suppose this might be why you see as many recvrs out there for sale.

I have(d) a few that they didn't want back, I think I may have tossed them, wondering while these are no longer used in thier system, if someone wanted to use one,, they would still be considered Leased, as far as I know.

He said no?You definitely made the correct decision. That would have been my cue to run like the wind.

RED FLAG right there. BY passing on this sale, you saved yourself $100. Because you have bought boat anchors.
What kind of idiot would have a garage sale, sell something he knows damned well is a ripoff...It's not like the buyer does not know where the seller lives.

Some people swear up and down, left and right and all around that their receivers are owned but a quick call to the satellite company proves otherwise in most cases. A lot of people don't even know that they don't own their receivers.

I won't give up my HR20. It was easy to swap in a 1TB drive and it tunes and records OTA. I also added a fan as it did run hot in its nook in my rolling outhouse. It may be old an ugly but it makes a great RV box.

A lot of people don't even know that they don't own their receivers.

Tell me about it, I had a guy renting two basement rooms and when D installed additional receiver H24 and I told him clearly that is a leased box which I charged him for the box upfront(discount price of $40) not the install charge, and said that is leased only and D wants it back if I decided to deactivate to return, So if he decided to move the box stays here as he is only paying lease fees plus a few for service, Then we he made the decision to move he tried to take the receiver with him and I told him no you can't do that because its leased, he got very defensive and said I paid for it so I get to keep it, I said no it doesn't work that way, Told him you paid upfront lease box like what you pay for a smartphone with 2 year contract(but dont get to keep) not to own as that will cost more money without a contract, So I gave him what he payed for the box and he was on his way.

Common occurrence, no doubt. Yet I doubt many think they own the box the cableco provides.

Totally true, however the Cable company doesnt charge you 200 bucks for a hddvr up front, but then again they will wack you an additional 16.95/month for each dvr, at least with dtv your at 6/receiver no mater what type.

As for the garage sale thing, the R15 and h20 most likely wouldnt be requested to be returned to dtv, however neither are really valuable receivers these days, the R15 is not SWM compatible, so it would require special (to todays standards) just to get it installed on most current setups. Unless you had a stickily SD setup on an SD Dish, but you still need two lines. Rather dated.

THe H20 may be SWM Compatible, but it is not MRV compatible, a common miss-occurrence. The HR20 is MRV Capable with a special setup, the H20 just plain is not. Although the ASTC tuner is nice an AM21 can do the same thing to any newer receiver and newer boxes have some much better features.

the HR22 is most likely leased unless there was a special occurrence to make it owned.

IIRC, the HR20-700 does mrv like the other models. It's the HR20-100 that needs the special setup.

This is 100% correct, but the HR20 is a dvr, the H20 is just a HD receiver which is not MRV complient.

Of course. I was just clarifying that only one model of the HR20 needs a special setup for mrv.

One reason why people might think they own their boxes is because in the past Directv subscribers did own their boxes. Then they went to leasing and some people didn't get the memo. I still have a couple of D11 boxes that I own but they aren't much good to me since when I deactivated them I had to send the access cards back.
