Although there is no region coding on HD-DVD discs, HD-DVD players still adhere to region coding for standard DVD discs. However, there is a way to convert the HD-A2 to REGION-FREE for standard DVD's! (This is not possible with the A3 or any 3rdGen players.)

Okay. How about $89?

This is an excellent value when you consider the 3-year extended warranty, free shipping, and region-free capability for SD DVD's. (Only the A2/A20/XA2 is upgradeable to SD Region-Free.)

Don't forget its excellent upconverting capability. I would keep it for that alone. But, I am trying to clean up my entertainment rack. Going for the "less is more" look.

gary, this was built before the A3 correct? just curious how you would rate this better. thanks.

It is more sturdily built than the A3. (There are online comparisons of the internal components and construction.) OTOH, the A3 is slightly sleeker looking, which may be important.

To me, the biggest difference is the A2's ability to upgrade to region-free SD playback. (I sometimes have a need to play R2 discs.)
