So in the living room we have HD but in the bedrooms we have SD on 1080p capable TV's...

I was wondering what i needed to do to get HD in another room. Is it as easy as buying a h24-700 and hooking it up to the tv. Calling directv for the access card and activation and walah HD.

Ive read that I may need another satellite installed ? :/

Working backwards............The satellites are in orbit 22,000 miles out in orbit.....In the Clarke belt.. It is the various dish antennae you are asking about.
Regarding the receivers.... you can call Directv and they will send a replacement HD receiver.
Since you already have one HD set running the correct dish is already installed so it would be a "box swap". The replacement receiver could use the access card you already have or the replacement will come with one. Make sure they do remove the old box & card from your account or you will be paying for an additional box per month

Going the other way....acquiring an HD box elsewhere....like at a yard sale or from a former DTV customer......It will cost you $20.00 for a new card and you roll the dice about the condition of the equipment. IF there are PPV charges on the box you get to pay them before they will activate your new used receiver. AND if you do not own that receiver now I am pretty sure anything you find will end up being DirecTv property. You will end up leasing the replacement box. New is best. Getting Directv to send a specific model is sometimes difficult. You will end up with HD service after your upgrade request is done

The other good news is you are already paying a monthly HD service fee....for the additional satellites....access to several satellites in two HD launch positions + the SD service ....+..the enhanced HD / SD dish antenna...and the HD receivers. The fee is per account so your cost per month will stay the same with the expanded HD use.

The DirecTV CSRs (call center representatives) make these arrangements all day, no biggie! 1 800 531 5000

Wow very helpful, Thank you, But would the replacement receiver be free ? And if not I guess I should upgrade online because DirecTV isnt open right now at 6:32 est. :/

:welcome to Satelliteguys plazplaya95!

Depending upon how good of a customer you are, payment history, monthly amount, etc. the boxes MIGHT be free. You will get a new two year commitment, however. Like Joe said, getting a box from eBay or a yard sale could result in you getting a door stop, that is a receiver that you can't activate. You are best getting it from Directv if possible.

Chip, & Plaz,

A theory on the street = IF you upgrade and will settle for any HD receiver or any HDDVR on the truck or in local inventory you have a better chance you will end up getting the upgrade with no charge. IF you must have a rare or recently new model they will attempt to fill their pockets. The receiver is still leased and still will provide all contracted services. I have found DirecTv eq to be pretty bug free but there is a chance you will get a rehab unit. This is usually tested and repacked / certified probably ok. SO the ploy is to call and inquire about costs and installation schedule + what models are available. If that doesn't suit ya....call back and try again until you get the result you want.

As Chip pointed out there is always some deal going on so exact results are hard to predict. I have not seen any mention of retail prices for any equipment recently.......possibly to avoid confusion about the lease thing or make it harder to compare price point with DISH. Not my game these days,

Joe
