...wow, they just keep falling! This time, the celeb/athlete is killed by his wife!

(CNN) -- Brazilian authorities detained the wife of former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti as a suspect in his killing, according to local reports.

Gatti was found dead Saturday in a hotel in Brazil, where he was taking a vacation with his wife, Amanda Carina Barbosa Rodrigues, and their young child.

The 37-year-old Canadian, who was born in Italy and made his name as a fighter based in New Jersey, was staying in the northeast seaside resort of Porto de Galihnas.

Rodrigues, 23, was being held in a police station in the city of Recife in connection with the killing, a police official in Porto de Galihnas told CNN.

Police official Osmar Silva Santiago confirmed local reports that Gatti's body was found Saturday morning in his hotel room with strangulation marks.

"This crime is being investigated by our homicide experts and we hope to have more answers tomorrow," Santiago said.

Police recovered a blood-stained purse strap from the scene, according to media reports.

Rodrigues became a suspect because of inconsistencies during her interrogation, local reports quoted homicide task force chief Josedith Ferreira as saying.

Gatti made his name in a series of three fights against "Irish" Micky Ward, losing the first but triumphing in the other two.

He held the IBF super-featherweight and WBC light-welterweight titles, and he also won the WBC junior welterweight belt but lost it to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2005.

Gatti retired in 2007 after suffering a knockout defeat by Alfonso Gomez in his comeback, ending with a record of 40 wins and nine losses.

He grew up in Montreal, Quebec, after leaving Italy at an early age, and returned to the city following his retirement.

According to Gatti's official Web site, the Italian-born pugilist won "Fight of the Year" for three consecutive years.

I saw this on some show like 60 Minutes or something like that, so I am not sure, but under Brazilian law if one spouse kills the other and pleads that it was a "fit of rage" because the other was "cheating" on him/her, then its some kind of minor deal and a small fine. Some women's group was all up in arms about it, but it would have to work both ways.

This is crazy! SUPPOSEDLY, he was found strangled to death. Now, unless this 23 year old woman had the grip of a pair of plyers....how did he not knock hr a$$ out? Really strange....

I was wondering the same thing. Gotti is an ex-athlete and a Boxer. How did a petite (I'm assuming) young girl get close enough to strangle him and finish the deal without him getting out of this?

The police found a "bloody purse/bag strap" at the scene. But still, even if she tried to kill him in his sleep...I would think he had enough time to get up and knock whom ever it was out....

What is with all these people getting killed or just dying.

Gatti strangled while he slept

Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Police investigating the death of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti are working on the assumption his wife strangled him with her purse strap while he drunkenly slept.

While cautioning that nothing is being ruled out, lead investigator Moises Teixeira told The Associated Press on Monday he is certain the woman acted alone.

"It was technically impossible for a third person to have been in the flat" where Gatti was found dead early Saturday, Teixeira said. "The investigation isn't finished, but we continue to think she did this alone."

Gatti's 23-year-old Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, told investigators she awoke Saturday about 6 a.m. to find her husband's body in the apartment they rented in Porto de Galinhas, a seaside resort in northeastern Pernambuco state.

Rodrigues told police she had a fight with Gatti after dinner Friday night and he pushed her to the ground, resulting in minor injuries to her elbow and chin. Witnesses also reported to police the couple fought and that Gatti was drunk.

Rodrigues told police the 37-year-old former junior welterweight champion then got into a cab with their son and returned to their rented apartment, leaving her alone downtown.

Teixeira said witnesses told police Gatti left his son to sleep in the apartment, then returned to the city center to find his wife. She arrived at the apartment before he did and waited for him. They then both went upstairs together.

Rodrigues told police she slept on the second floor of the apartment with her son, while Gatti slept on the first floor. She told police she awoke at 6 a.m. to feed her son and discovered her husband's body. Police say he most likely had been killed at least four hours before that.

Teixeira said police do not think anyone else entered the apartment and killed Gatti -- he said there were no signs of forced entry and electronic locks indicated nobody else had entered the room aside from Rodrigues and Gatti.

The investigator said Rodrigues told them she thought her husband had committed suicide or that someone had entered the apartment and killed him. Teixeira ruled out both scenarios.

Rodrigues' sister, Flavia, told the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo there is "no way she could have strangled a man of that size."

Rodrigues' attorney, Celio Avelino, told the AP he agreed with Flavia's conclusion and he would request Amanda be freed from jail Tuesday pending the conclusion of the investigation.

"She is fragile, young and skinny -- how could she kill a boxing champion?" Avelino said. "When she awoke, she presumed he had committed suicide. But she had nothing to do with it."
