Last week I bought a new iMac VESA adapter. Turns out that SOME iMacs are made in a way that it’s physically impossible to remove the stupid desk stand. So I can not use this at all.
The iMac I know for certain that it won’t work on is an A1311 - 2428 (MC309LL/A)
Actually there are a limited number of iMacs that you can remove the desk stand and replace it with a VESA adapter so you are 100% on your own to do the research and make sure that it will work on your iMac.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE IT WILL FIT YOUR iMAC !!

Apple is very unclear about the specific models that it will and won’t work with. What you must do is get the model number printed on the bottom of the display stand then go to google and start by searching for (as in my case) “A1311 EMC #2428 VESA adapter”. You can’t go by Apple’s stupid little list, it’s useless. You’ve got to google for it. One thing you can try however is slipping a plastic card in the back of your mac and see if you can trip the little latch or not. There are plenty of youtube videos showing how to do it, how to remove the stand and install the VESA adapter.
It’s still new in the box but I tore the plastic when I took the bracket out to look at it. Also I dropped the little white plastic card on the floor and one of my dogs destroyed it. Any thin plastic card will work such as any store gift card or if you’re brave, your credit card. But it might shave off the raised numbers on the card so I would just use a flat plastic gift card, the single use kind.
The Apple brand adapters are $40 plus sales tax and shipping.
I got mine for $30 plus sales tax and shipping so I’m into it for about $40.
I’m knocking $5 off for the missing plastic card so I’m asking $35 for the adapter plus whatever the actual shipping would be through USPS. I can take Paypal and will ship in 24 hours or less (unless it’s a weekend and then it will have to wait till Monday)..
