Dish has installed for me a dish 1000 elliptical dish capable of receiving the 110,119 and 129 satellites. The 129 is coming in very weak. Dish says to peak the 119 at 161 azimuth to maximize the 129 signal.

According to what I have read the 129 bird, aka echostar 5 & telstar 7, should be set at 189 <16 declination> or 172 az. for my neck of the woods.

My question is this: Since the dish 1000 is aimed at 161 degrees how can I expect a strong signal on the 129? Or what am I missing here?

Note that the book numbers for the D1000 are not always accurate.

In fact, NONE of the numbers seen anywhere (book, receiver, online calculator) should be used for anything other than a starting point.

Grab your meter and peak the dish aim.

Here is a quick suggestion - take it or leave it, for a five minute fix -

set your receiver on the 129 best signal (or transponder) and bring it up a notch
(I can do this myself while listening to hear the change in tone from the dish antenna location)
- not all the way - and all 3 satellites may be acceptable w/o much drop in signal
for the other two.... also S.SImon is right, book numbers and also scale on antenna
can be off 2 -3 degrees easily.
