First Run Recording With HR20

Even with my DTIVO I had problems with Monk and some other shows, the network doesn't put out any info on some shows, then it comes up with a generic listing of the show. The DTIVO will record it, even if it's a marathon day with 24 shows, it will still record it. The DVRs need an accurate description with the shows so it knows to record it or not, especially where it says repeat or first run.
Thats where the PSIP from the network comes in handy .
Monk is also on USA right ?? same as the ones I am having trouble with.
This doesn't answer elwaylite's issue with his show, but I still think it's related to the network and the PSIP, but if his 622 recorded it correctly then the HR20 should also.

But most of my problems come when the shows like Monk season is over, then during the off time they have generic listings.

I just looked at my todo list on my DTIVO and 9/7 at 5pm it's scheduled to record a repeat of psych, it has the shows description but it's a repeat, I already recorded and watched it. But at the bottom of the description it doesn't say repeat, it says series. That is where the problem lies, if the network doesn't put out that it's a repeat, it will record all the shows.

elwaylite,
Is it picking up "First Runs " and also recording the same first run later in the week, if ya know what I'm saying. for example, let say your 1st run Show is Eureka and the title of the episode is #1, you see that it is recording Eureka on Thursday night as well, look at Thursdays episode and see what the title is .... See if it is titled # 1 .... IF it is, isn't this actually a First Run show, being also shown later in the week, like alot of shows do now ????

Jimbo

Yeah, looking at the hard copy tv guide, it says multiple "NEW" labels for the same episode on multiple nights. Pretty dumb.

You are correct, if the network doesn't list it as a repeat, it will record it regardless, I guess you could talk to the network and ask that they correct thier PSIP description.

I also noticed that at the end of last years series that I watch, after a few weeks , the HR20 dropped the listing. I presume that means that you have to reset your series links each year, I guess.

That's weird, my DTIVO never does that. I don't think my R-15s even do that.

I guess it's possible that it is stored in the memory and will find them when they start to show up on the guide (14 days out).
The HR20's have not been out long enough to know for sure.

I have shows like the Shield in my season pass since the first season and never changed it.

Is it possible that the HR20 has some sort of historical marker/memory? For instance, this box is brand new. This particular box has never recorded the show in question prior to this week's NEW episode, so it records the repeat because to it, it is a NEW show? Do these things "learn" by previous recordings?

I have an issue with American Chopper on Discovery HD Theater. It records each and every "differently" labeled episode, even if it was previously recorded. The new ones I find are actually the ones that have no show information. No title, and just the generic "Father and Son build motorcycles together", or something like that.

Maybe it is a box issue, but I tend to think that this boils down to proper PSIP coding. No NEW tag, or no REPEAT tag, it records just to be safe...

Boy, you guys are borderline fanboys when it comes to someone talking negatively about D*(or what you feel is negative). Ive owned both, so I can complain. Granted this was not even a complaint, but you are so helplessly concerned with defending D* it blinds you. You cant finish an argument except for to say "go back to echostar if you dont like it" because you've run out of constructive comments.

Jimbo you made it a point to note it wasnt just a D* issue in the HDMI post. I never said it was, I said PROVIDERS because many dvr's still have the issue. Quit assuming everyone is out to get you and D*.

Back to the orginal argument, if both use Tribune and E*'s works fine, then is it not a D* issue?

The HR20 and 622 have their strengths and weakness's. This thread is about one I feel the HR20 has.

One sure "work around" is to use manual recording to record only the episode's first run and no others. It's a little more trouble, but it's pretty fail safe and saves space on your hd for other programs.

Looks like it was mostly my mistake. A couple of shows Ive set up for my trip will record extra episodes that arent needed, but most are A-OK.

I was misunderstanding what was to be recorded and what was to be skipped under prioritizer, then episodes.

I set up manuals for the others.
