First Rumor of 2009 - 922 Screenshot?

I could not disagree with you more. I LOVE the enhanced with video guide. It still lists plenty of channels on the screen and I can still follow what is going on in the picture (especially helpfull when there are lots of ball games on). That "little window" is still pretty darn big on my 60" TV. ;)

I have a 70" sxrd. I know how big the video looks. I choose not to use it. ;)

I've always wanted this feature in Dish's program guide.... I liked it when DirecTV had it, what, 6-7 years ago ? To be honest, there are many channels that I don't really know their names and the abbreviations used don't help me enough !

Yeah! I love how DirecTV has the logos in their guide and when you change the channels. I used to have DirecTV and now I have Dish.

I like the dark background colors as well verses the white background - Do you think maybe in this photo that this could just be the standard guide with video and that they might also have the extended guide with video option like the VIP series have in the menus - i loved the dishplayer EPG layout and this one seems to have a similar look

I think having video in the guide is wasted screen real estate. If you turn off the pic in guide you get more channels listed. If one relly needs pic with guide hit browse instead. I have 8 irds in the house from dish and bell and non have pic in guide turned on.

Someone call engineering and have them pull the plug on this project. Eskimo has spoken...we've all been doing it wrong.

I maybe haven't been with Dish long enough, but do they ever change the look of the EPG for a receiver ? That is, someone with a 322 wakes up in the morning and the EPG looks completely different, not the difference from one receiver to another. I suspect that would cause a lot of support phone calls for the "average" customer.

I remember back when I first signed up with Dish, I got the 811 and a 322, and I always wished that they'd update the 811's cruddy DOS-looking plain text interface to match the 322, but obviously that never happened. None of the receivers with that plain cruddy interface were ever updated to the current interface. I'd be surprised if they upgraded the current ViPs to match the new 922 stuff.

They have had a few "themes" for the Dish STB receivers that I can recall.

1. The old Light Green/Gray that was used in the Dish 6000 and 2000 receivers.
2. The "Open TV" look in the 4900, 501/510, 811 receivers.
3. The updated OPENTV look that we have in current receivers 522/625/622/722 (and a few others).
4. Special DVR looks for the 721/921 and the old Dishplayer.

I'm sure some aged vets will list a few that I missed out on, and no I wasn't going to try to list all of the known receivers.

But to my Knowlege, dish has not significantly changed the look for their software on a receiver. I do know that did change the look on my 510 a year or two ago, but it was slight and I can't say I would call it out a real change in look.

I understand that the "look" on a 311 may look different than a 722 or a 6000 looks different than a 921. I meant, does Dish ever change the look of the 622's guide with a software update ? I just don't see Dish changing the current ViP receivers to look similar to this 922 receiver or if they did, the current "theme" would remain in place and the user would have to choose the new look.

re-read my last paragraph. I haven't seen them change the look of the GUIDE via a software release, with a slight exception of the 510, and even that wasn't anything to write home about.

I truly value the video as part of the guide. Having an option to turn it off and get more data would not be a bad option. Trying to remember if my 721 had that option.

What's the purpose of the touchpad?

And will the unit be usable without it? Meaning, will aftermarket universal remotes be able to control it via IR, or will this be some kind of weird proprietary thing?

I remember the change to the 510. I actually liked the change as it gave more options almost as good as the 625.

You gotta think though, once people start getting used to something they think change is bad. Not everyone is like this, obviously but there are a lot of people out there that wouldn't like it to change. Some people would see it easier to stick with the same thing because they have gotten used to it and it works. Others like the fact that improvements have been done and the interface looks better to the eye. How do you please both? Create and build a whole new receiver and release it with all the new software that you learned may or may not have worked with the previous receiver? Seems to be the answer lately.

I am looking forward to reading as much about this model as possible from SG members at CES, especially its Sling capabilities, as well as expected availability and pricing for new subs.

Photos too please. Front, back, remote, and screenshots. Thanks.

Scott, is this all we can read about the new 922 for now?

What color do people like for their new guide and menu just don't do anything for me at all, I am sorry:)

Hey whatever happened to the modular centralized multi-room setup that was rumored a year or two ago? I recall reading about a design where you could snap in additional receiver and DVR modules as needed, and there being a very simple dumb box in each room with the outputs and the remote interface. Is that idea dead?

I have been saying this for years.

An update to the EPG and Menu look and feel is much needed. I wonder if they will be able to implement this change that they are doing to the 922 to the existing receivers that we have as well.

Man upset with the DTV transition
