First Reactions to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8

Odd that you aren't getting sound notifications. I checked on mine after I saw your posts and mine is sounding properly. I had to turn the volume up as I normally keep it off while working unless I'm playing a tune or during videos.

I decided yesterday that since my VMWare 3.1.x wasn't compatible, I would just do a boot camp install of the Windows 7 I had bought and paid for. Well, it wasn't fun! I kept getting to a certain point in the installation of W7 that would take the screen black and just stop installing. The first time, I thought maybe it just took a long time, but then on subsequent tries it did the same thing.

Turns out that it is a problem with the W7 installation on some Macs. Seems that the video drivers, and maybe some others, aren't there and the install goes looking for them and never finds them. Did a google on 'black screen windows 7 boot camp' and found an article by Apple that indicated I needed to download a file and unpack it into the root of either a usb stick or external HD. Did that and all was good. At the time that the screen had gone black before, it now switched to a slightly different resolution and kept going.

Now that I've got W7 on Boot Camp, I have no clue what I will actually ever use it for!

Got to be honest not really anything new in the version of the OS that excites me. I tried the voice dictation and for me it dont work half the time.

I have only tried voice dictation a few times, but it works just like on the iPad and iPhone, and I have had good success with it.

The reality is this is .x upgrade; one that costs $20, but there is more than $20 worth of value in it for me. The greater integration with iCloud is great; I am using the Notes app more then I ever did on the iPad, just because it is so easy to get stuff from device to device.

I do not like how the dock light is so dim I can barely tell which apps are active. And since most of my apps are still using growl, I don't see a lot of value in the notification bar yet.

But for all of iCloud, I find myself using Microsoft's Skydrive more than any other cloud service. With the 25Gb of free storage I got, and the ability to use industry standard word processing and spreadsheet programs online, it just works great. And that data storage amount is far less than I need, so backing up all my data to there is not an issue.

I forgot about the changes to Safari -- it is completely my go-to browser. particularly given the synchronicity with the iOS version.

I don't see iCloud as the same as Sky Drive or Drop Box; its less a file storage system, then a media/syncing tool for me. I use it for iOS backups, for iTunes match, for contacts., and for calendars. The complete single step (login in to iCloud) to bring everything together from machine to machine is better implemented then I have seen on anything. Sure, it would be nice to have dropbox functionality (and it is getting better for Apple apps, like iWork) but I am content keeping that separate.

I may misunderstand, but it seems that the iWork with iCloud makes the files on iCloud, but not necessarily showing up in the local drive.

It will save the files either on iCloud or on "My mac" and you can move/duplicate, but the files on iCloud are only there.

I read a couple articles that indicated it would sync to the Mac and all iOS devices, and one even told me how. I tried that, set all the way they said, and still my local Numbers file is only on my Mac and not in iCloud.

No, you have to either move or copy the files to iCloud. And if you want them on both, select Duplicate. It creates a file, then in the title bar (or the menu) select move to iCloud.

Its not as smooth as it could be, but seems to work pretty well.

There is a hidden directory that handles this. Finder -- Go (with Option key) -- Library -- Mobile Documents

That folder has documents to sync. I tested. Stuff a file in the proper folder in that Mobile Documents area, then work with the document on your Mac. When you close/save that file, it will sync automagically to your iWork folder in iCloud.

NOTE: When you click on Mobile Documents, notice the top of the finder window, it will say iCloud. Interesting, huh?

You can also save files to the main Mobile Docs folder and it will automatically sync to any other macs on your account. Since I have been reconfiguring my mbp, I have the two machines here, and sure enough it works like a charm. The tech is there for a dropbox-like system, just up to Cupertino to flesh it out. It would be nice if there were a way on the iPad to access that mobile docs folder. (And not just in the specific iWork document.

Yes, the notifications do not produce any sound at all. I find the notification bar far less useful than I thought - although it may just be that I am not used to it. Plus the two finger swipe interferes with safari pretty regularly.

I get the standard beep and a banner in the upper right corner of the desktop whenever a notification occurs.

Anyone else having problems with Safari bookmarks? My bookmarks keep disappearing. I just get a blank window when I open the page. Closing the Safari window and restoring it clears the problem for awhile but it keeps recuring.

I haven't had any issues with Safari in any way. Quicker and everything works as it is supposed to.

I have no idea why mail is silent; I swear the settings are all correct.

No bookmark problems here. Safari is da bomb.

Installing Mountain Lion now. During the setup a pop up ask, "Setup Assistant wants to use your confidential information stored in "InternetAccounts Access Group" in your keychain." Then it ask to Always Allow, Deny, or Allow. First, what in the heck is this? Second, which option should I choose?

I would "Deny" it and then worry about saving your password back into your keychain later.
